B2Fresh
I'm getting ready to see about a coil over set up for my 78 B210. I need to find out why is the outter diameter of the strut housing to get the correct coil overs. Much appreciated for helpful info. Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
Digital micrometers can be had at harbor freight for like $5 with a 20% off coupon. Then double it up with a free tarp. Money spent on coilovers should be spent to save up for 280zx struts. Quote Link to comment

B2Fresh
Been looking for some 280zx struts and when I find them there stupidly over priced and it's a lot cheaper run the coil overs and easier get.., Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
Define stupidly priced. Because coil overs are stupid priced when you can do the split collar mod for a tenth of coilover cost. Better brakes, camber, and installing stock 280zx struts alone will lower your car. datzenmike
The reason 280zx struts are expensive is that you can go lower with them because they are a shorter strut tube to begin with, as well as the incredible brake up grade. If you are buying coil overs just to go that low, it won't work. You may get 3" maybe, and there is the real possibility of bottoming on a big bump. You can do the same thing (up to 2.5-3") for under $30 with a hack saw and a pair of split collars. Totally adjustable ride height and if you make a few measurements, and some times and divide math, you can work out how much to trim the spring to increase your spring rate. I highly recommend stiffening your stock spring, it lessens the chance of bottoming out the strut. Improves the handling and rid too. If you remove the gland nut on top of the strut and find that no one has replaced the stock oil dampers with inserts, you can drain out the thin watery hydraulic oil and substitute 20W motorcycle fork oil. Thicker oil resists flowing through the internal damper valves and firms up the shock action. For under $20 a liter. Coil overs are a lot of money for adjusting your ride height once and then drive around on. Hundreds of dollars riding around not being used. Quote Link to comment
