MantisX620
So this would be the second time this has happened. I recently upgraded my oil pump to a KA pump on my L20B engine. I set the engine to TDC using the notch on the pulley. I pulled my disti plate and the disti notch inside was sitting at 11:29. I dropped the old oil pump and spindle, cleaned surfaces and lined up the dot on the spindle with the arrow on the new pump. I installed the new pump and the notch in the disti plate still remained at 11:29. I get in my truck and it wont start, carbs sputtering and spitting. I shift each plug wire 1 position over on the disti cap 3x and on the 3rd rotation of wires it starts right up. If nothing changed or moved when I uninstalled and reinstalled the new pump, why did my timing still move enough that I would have to move the wires around to get it to start? This also happened before when I removed the pump to change the gasket. The truck runs fine now, but I feel like my timing has never been truly right because of this odd happening. Thanks MantisX Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
You were at TDC on the exhaust stroke or 180 out? If you look at the spindle at 11:28 there is a small and large half moon on each side of the tang that goes up into the distributor. 1 Quote Link to comment

banzai510(hainz)
you watch my vid?????? when at 11.28 then install the rotor. I would adjust the timming plate so its in the middle of the movment. That means on back side of dist theres a 8mm bolt that hold the plate . get it loose and the 10mm bolt loosen the mount set it close to number 1 plug wire on cap when you install th rotor. it should be right on. Then lock everything down. Should be able to start then adjust to say 7-14dugs ez. the I moved position 3s part got me confused???If you say you moved the dist wire over 3 places then you more or less rotated the wires 180 degs. If you watch my vid episode 5 or 6(youtube) it shows the rotor when it locks down that will be number 1 and then go 1 3 4 2 Counter clockwise. Motor is TDC Most time people can pu the mount on 180 off from last time they had the moto aprt and put it on 180 off and didn't swap the wires on the cap. as that what it was set last if timming is wondering around when putting a light on its most like a distributor going bad 2 Quote Link to comment

Thanks MantisX You probably put the spindle in 180 out. as stated, 11:29 FAT BACK 1 Quote Link to comment
