Mrjreezy's KA-T 620

Hey all,

I'm new here to the forum. Last weekend I picked up a 1979 620 that is in pretty rough condition. The paint looks like old spray paint. There's a garden in the engine bay, and it was hardly a rolling shell with the ubolts dragging the ground.

Now on a sidenote, when it comes to cars I'm not new to the turbo world. I've had tons of dsm's, worked on countless 240'a and currently drive a big turbo SRT-4 and and my baby which is a 91 miata that has been my biggest project for the last 5 years.

So my intentions for buying the 620 is to put a KA in that is built for boost, which I have already found and bought and just waiting for my buddy to bring it to me. Pics of the truck and engine will be posted soon.

To be honest 2eDeYe is a big reason why I joined the forum. I found a thread about him selling the KA mounts and then started lurking on the entire forum. I love posting/reading build threads and I always rely on forums for information, so why not join?

Thanks for the welcome!

To kick things off here are some pics of my current cars

My 91 turbo miata. Still needs to be tuned and have the maf removed. It's been a long haul.

And now for the 620

Last but not least, the freshly built KA going in it

Machine work has been done

.020 Pistons

248/248 hot cam swap

polished and balanced crank

new acl bearings

arp head studs

felpro headgasket

The turbo I run will most likely be a t28 of some sort. Possibly a disco potato if I save a bit more and find one at a good price. Or I may stick with a t25 just for a safe relaible power level. I have no official idea at this point.

It's a KA with a fresh rebuild and no miles.

ARP headstuds

Felpro headgasket

.20 over

248/248 cams

550cc injectors

Z32 man

Isis turbo manifold

5speed trans with new throw out bearing and short throw shifter

3 row rad

Intercooler with some piping (it's pretty huge though)

the "white bunny" clutch setup

Engine harness

And a rom tuned ecu

I just need to get a t25 or t28 and some mounts from ]2eDeYe to complete the setup. The plan now is to save for brake upgrades before anything else. It'll be awhile for that. But I'll probably clean the gas tank and stuff in the meantime. I'll also have to build a fuse box. I saw a thread on here how to do it, I just need to find it again.

A few days ago I ordered the mounts for ]2eDeYe and they should be here thursday.

Today I got bored and realized how much I hated this gold spray painted engine bay. So I grabbed a couple of cans of black spray paint and decided to paint everything to make it look at least a little more decent.

After

At least it looks a little better. I will paint the truck, but I don't care too much about the engine bay. As long as it looks decent.

I did notice it had some front end damage that may be a concern later on. The bumper brace is bent up and the core support looks off just a little bit.

Mrhreezy,

Nice truck and welcome. I have a 73 I'm doing the same thing too...I wanted to ask if you figured out how to get around the turbo manifold getting in the way of the brake booster? I'm stuck there and looking at a top mount with a spacer to move the turbo out of the way...good luck!

Honestly I haven't got that far yet. Looking at the bay I figured it would be though. You answered that question. I'll try to get the engine in, but honestly deleting the brake booster is probably the way I'm going to go.

The pedal feel won't be as good, and you'll have to push down harder, but at least the bay will look clean I suppose..

If you pick the right parts your brakes will have feedback like you have never had. A stiff pedal is not because of the lack of power assist but rather the wrong size bores.

Look at the tilton Model 74. They can be bolted together for added rigidity. You'll need two. One for the front and one for the back.

Is that a caged engine bay?

So I haven't gotten around to work on the truck as much as I've wanted. I do have a few updates.

I found some one stage paint that I liked and decide to go ahead and paint the truck. I got rid of the surface rust using a wire wheel. I didn't notice how many dents this thing had until after I painted it. Kind of breaks my heart, but oh well this is just going to be a fun beater.

And I painted the entire frame black with stop rust paint.

It doesn't look like I can use my Isis manifold. It's up real close against the steering column and I doubt the turbo is going to fit. Keeping this a cheapish build I have already gotten a top mount log manifold to replace it. It will at least work. I'm going to try and fit it on the bottom mount first at least. My turbo is only a t25/28 hybrid. It could work. But doubtful.

The truck only came with one shock that wasn't in too good of shape so I bought some replacements and put them on. They're from AutoZone. Hijackers. So I can at least fill them up with air to stiffen the ride which might come in handy.

These aren't the hoses' permanent resting places. After I get the bed on I'll do better routing.
