RugerLuger
Does anyone know what the actual dimensions are for the diameter of the shift fork roll pins? (Nissan Calls em retaining pins) I replaced a shift fork a few months ago and used the closest size roll pin I could find from the hardware store- as Nissan has then on backorder. It just fell out this last Friday on my way to work. So I want to visit the local fastener specialty vendor and get the proper metric ( I assume) sized roll pin rather than wait for Nissan to get them in. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Tranny is 1980 Fs5w71b close ratio out of 280zx. Thanks Rugerluger Quote Link to comment
DanielC
Possibly the next metric size up from whatever imperial size you used. Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
Try upgrading to a dual roll pin (one pin inside the other). You can buy any roll pin you need here - http://www.mcmaster.com/#roll-pins/=14a3tes 1 Quote Link to comment
shacks510
I was thinking I should upgrade the pins in my transmission when I rebuild it. Another "while I'm in there" deal. It wouldn't hurt if I put a loop of safety wire through the pin and around the fork so if for whatever reason it became loose, it wouldn't fall out...? Just an over precaution... darrel
I have seen a nut and bolt used. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The hole is 0.192" (I just measured a 71B one) or a calculated 4.87mm so the pin is usually slightly larger so it's compressed when driven in. A 5mm pin is only 0.005" larger... not really that much different. Maybe talk to a machinist about it. It should be more than tight enough to not ever fall out. 1 Quote Link to comment
RugerLuger
Got my transmission apart and dug out my calipers. Just like Mike said they are 5mm x 25mm. I also measured the I.D. for the double pin upgrade. My pins would take 3mm x 25mm roll pins down the center if I go that route and for $0.38 I think I will. Thanks everyone for your help. 1 Quote Link to comment
G-Duax
There are one piece double roll pins, just go to McMaster Carr to see what they look like. These are all their 5mm pins. You would have to buy a 30mm long one, and trim it. http://www.mcmaster.com/#roll-pins/=14ak6p1 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Just make sure it's a tight hammer in fit. 1 Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
The dual roll pins I use are a nice, tight fit. 1 Quote Link to comment
