“You know what would be cool?...“

Recommended Posts

I am remiss in expressing my sincere appreciation to whomever makes a free resource like Ratsun possible. I see all kinds of sites and forums as I cruise around, and none are quite like this one. This is really excellent. I love this place. Thank you, to everyone responsible for it.

I have no business wishing for more. In fact, I worry that changing it at all might destroy its piquant bouquet of anarchy, superb mechanical advice, and general ribaldry. I really dig this place hard.

But do you know what would be cool?

On days like today, when I am waiting for my engine lift to materialize, I would love to be in a video capable Ratsun chat room. Or maybe cruising trough the index of a Ratsun YouTube channel. Shit, I‘d subscribe to / pay a fee for/ the opportunity to drop into a video channel of any Ratsun member doing their truck chores. A GoPro on your stocking cap and a remote Internet link and of we are in show bidness! Imagine how potentially funny / entertaining it would be to watch any of the senior members- or newbies- do their thing. Myself, I would give VTR like a solid time slot. Seriously, it may be impractical and more of a grenade than any changes that I might worry about now, But it could be pretty cool.

I used to get my hair cut at a super cheapo place out in Lacey called SuperFades. I went there not for the hair cut, which is invariably horrible, or for the bargain, which it is not considering the outcome, but rather for the laughs. The laughs were great. The place is run by a Korean lady who speaks little english. Her second in command is a latina who is fluent enough in korean to keep all of the other korean ‘barbers‘ in stitches with comments in korean about the customers. It all goes over everyones head, except the other korean ‘barbers‘ and other korean speaking people waiting their turn. Without any intention of being funny- I mean NONE- this place and these women can be the funniest experience you will ever have. I have left the place doubled over. By the way, everyone who leaves the place sports a crude Kim Jung Un influenced haircut. I think only one lady has any idea how to cut hair.  You can‘t make this shit up.

The reason I tell you about SuperFades is because I think a place like Ratsun has a similar potential, in a much different way. I actually went to the owner of SuperFades and asked for permission to make a movie of it. (I make movies sometimes) The owners thought my idea of loading the shop with hidden cameras and letting them roll for a month was insane. It made them nervous. “You crazy, spend your money like that!“ after they turned me down, I stopped going there for haircuts. They made my wife shriek.

But I swear, it would have been a very funny movie. I think Ratsun has SuperFades potential. Not saying it should happen, but just daydreaming, I can picture it....

That would be Jeff (Icehouse) http://community.ratsun.net/user/3-icehouse/  .Ratsun member number 3, but pretty much his brainchild with help from Thomas the webmaster. This was a little over 9 1/2 years ago, now. At the time, some of us old timers here on Ratsun were also on another forum that really was more of a car club and just happened to have an internet forum. It was ignored, poorly run, growing, and didn't really serve our purposes properly. When improvement suggestions by Jeff fell on deaf ears he started Ratsun. Most of us moved here, and the rest is 9 1/2 years of history. In just two years Datsun/Nissan will have been in North America for 60 years. We, will have been there for 12 of them.

I don't think Jeff would mind if you sent him a thank-you note..

For those with Mic and / or webcam capability we can use some third party programs like Skype for audio and video calls. It's limited to 10 users in a single video call, however, programs like "Discord", "Ventrilo", and "TeamSpeak" have the ability to have a lot of users in a voice-chat lobby. Video is not allowed on these programs, to my knowledge.

Hilarity may ensue, or, may prove totally useless.

Again, thank Jeff for this. He was adamant when he started Ratsun that there be no ads or banners, under any circumstance, on his forums. Nothing but Datsuns and their owners, shooting the breeze, working on their vehicles, trading stories, helping others out, or just hanging out.  A uniquely exclusively Datsun site.

I'm grateful for Icehouse. Absolutely. But you deserve a milkshake for adopting such a demanding teenager of a website. No homo.

Thanks Mike.
