Got this engine W24 block N47 head

I got this motor over the weekend. Maxima motor and wiring harness. I bought it thinking it was a Z motor and didn't know the differences.

I've searched and searched online for info and found very little. It's a W24 block with N47 head and fuel injection. It's faint but has what appears to read 84 Maxima on power steering pump. One thing I found said if sump was in front it was a Maxima motor.

I saw several opinions on the N47 head.

I know the man I got it from. He said many years ago he had a 280ZX turbo and the turbo went bad. He bought this motor and wiring harness from a wreck that had less that 10,000 miles on it.

He put it in his shop, never got around to the swap. Sold the Z and the motor has sat for years. He mentioned the motor to me one day and said he was going to scrap it. So I bought it from him.

I'd like thoughts and opinions on the motor. Ideas, info.Is it worth keeping? I gather the block can't sit in a Z due to the sump being in front. Some folks seem to say the head is a good swap with different ports than the E88.

The price was good the only tough part was moving it. I'd like to know what someone with more knowledge thinks.

W24 code was used on the '80-'81 810Maxima. The N42 head on the L28 zx engine ... maybe on the L24 but I can't find it..

The engine size is stamped on a flat raised boss just below the head on the upper side of the block just below the #5 spark plug. If Maxima or 810 it will say L24

If L24 and has EFI then this pretty much confirms 810/Maxima.

There was an earlier L24 used in the first gen 240z car.

Thanks Mike. I appreciate it.

Other than the oil pan, oil pickup and the N47 head, is the block and internals same as early L24?

Just trying to gather a bit of info so I'll know. Plenty online about L24/26/28 but not much on this motor.

I'm glad to have gotten it even if it just sits in the garage.

There it is, L24. I didn't see these numbers when I originally looked. I'm gradually getting more familiar with these motors. I've messed more with rotaries and flat four motors. And I'm only a half ass mechanic. Learn by asking and doing and the help of others.

I do appreciate everyone taking time to check this out and offer advice. Thanks flatcat.

These L motors are gigantic compared to rotaries and flat fours.

DatzenMile gave the location earlier in this thread. I was just hitting it home.

Thing with the L24...anyone that has one wants an L28.

Except the S30 guy doing a stock restore/resto-mod on his 240z.

That guy, does not exist here.

That motor is basically good for parts. Flat top pistons for L16. L16/L24 rods. And the valves can be made to fit other L heads.

Maybe some of the electric bits will work for L28 stuff.

None crazy desirable, but it is what it is.

Nobody reads my stuff....  :hmm:

Take a look, if it has EFI then an 810 or Maxima. These engines used a different piston pin and rod than the earlier L24s in the Z car. There was something about them that's different. Takes the same rod bearings ....

Does it have a distributor on it? Look for a small black box on the side. If it says E12-80 it could be an 810 or a '81-'82Maxima. If it has an E12-93 it's an '83-'84 Maxima.

I read your post Mike   It's kind of dark in my garage and I didn't even see that set of numbers. I had to go back and try again, lol.

Yes it's fuel injection. And the black box on the distributor says IGM-08.

I also have the wiring harness. It was only missing the fan. He said he may find it somewhere.

I'm almost positive now after all of this info that the writing on the power steering pump does say 84 Maxima. It's worn off in spots and messy. And my eyes aren't as good as they used to be.

Basically this motor isn't worth anything but I didn't pay much for it. Maybe someone can use it one day. I hate to see things get scrapped when they can be used.

I didn't get a great score like I thought I had. But the motor is in great shape, still has Nissan belts on it. It may come in handy at some point.

Thanks guys for all your help. It's very much appreciated.

IGM-08 is totally unfamiliar to me!!! There is also an E12-92? The point is that there are two extra wires for the side plug that the E12-80 does not have. These are only used on the '83-'84 Maxima. So that pretty much nails down the year of your engine.

It's supposed to be low miles too. he said the car it came form had less than 10,000 when he got it many years ago. It's still got Nissan belts on it. Guess it's not good for much unless someone needed a Maxima motor.

But still it was cheap. And I learned a few things about it from you guys. Thanks again for the help and responses. I appreciate it.

My 240 still has the L24 in it. I just got this because it was cheap and I didn't want to see it scrapped. And initially  when I was told about it I thought it was a L28. He didn't say what it was, He just said he was going to swap it into a ZX car at one time.

If I ever do an engine swap I'd want to do L28 or an RB. But that's a long time away.
