4 speed swap to a 5 speed

The 200sx 5 speed and the 720 4 speed should be 31.5" long.

 

Clutches don't care what transmission is behind them. Transmissions don't care what clutches are in front of them. They in no way care about each other so you can mix and match any transmission to any clutch that will fit the engine. The only thing you have to keep in mind is the clutch release collar, that is mounted on the transmission clutch arm, MUST STAY with the clutch. The release collar IS part of the clutch and matched to IT, and has nothing to do with the transmission.

 

If you are installing a 5 speed, make sure the release collar from the old 4 speed stays, and is put on the 5 speed.

 

Last.... before swapping, remove the speedometer pinion sleeve in the tail and swap into the 5 speed. Like the clutch release collar, the speedometer pinion is matched to the differential gear ratio and must stay with the truck. Change to 5 speed but keep the 4 speed pinion sleeve. The 200sx differential is 3.545, your truck is likely 3.889 so your speedometer would read much too slow. By keeping the 720 pinion, your speedometer will stay the same.

 

 

*always replace the release bearing on the collar with a new one. These are high wear items and worst of all.... hard to get at to change. So while you are swapping the transmission and it is easy, replace it.

In all cases the release collar is matched to the clutch. Change to any transmission you like but keep the release collar and clutch together they are a matched set.

 

The clutch assemble (including the release collar) doesn't care what transmission it is driving behind it.

The transmission, does not care what clutch is ahead of it.

 

 

 

 

 

(always replace the bearing, because it's easy to do now while it's out than later when it's in the car)
