redhead
Can someone let me know what type of carrier this is?? It doesn't seem to be open carrier. This is the vehicle plate this setup came out of. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Says right on the tag C200 4.375 ratio. The 4 pinion diffs look kind of like an LSD. try turning the axle side gears in opposite directions. Take a look into that dark opening. If there are side and spider gears, it's open. Post a picture with more lighting. 1 Quote Link to comment
Charlie69
It looks open to me as you can see the side and spider gears shafts. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Indeed. It may also be what is called a 4 pinion carrier. I don't see a pinion shaft that holds the spider gears . Quote Link to comment
redhead
Thanks guys! I took a better picture of inside. Looks to be open carrier. Quote Link to comment
wayno
This is what a C200 carrier looks like, I don't know what that carrier is. The Carrier below came out of a 4X4 720 with a C200 rearend, it fit in my C200 dually axle once I changed out the side gears to fit my axles. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The one above has two side gears, one for each axle, and two spider gears that ride between them like above. This one has the two side gears and four spiders, one on each side and a top and bottom. Totally surrounding the side gears. This is an '87 left hand drive, Z24, Long Box 4X4, D-21, ST model, 5 speed, EFI, Federal emissions. Quote Link to comment
wayno
So will that newer C200 carrier fit in my older C200 axle housing? Are the side gears the same size as the older C200 side gears? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Good question wayno. I see the same part numbers for the side gears on the C200 (38423-B4000) on the D21 and on some of the earlier 720 differentials. The side gears must have the same splines so your axles fit. I'd say yes. The four pinion will take more abuse. Quote Link to comment
wayno
The C200 dually side gears/axles have a different spline count than the C200 4X4 axles/side gears, I had to change them out when I put the 4X4 carrier into my dually axle, so that is why I asked if the side gears are the same between the two somewhat different C200 carriers. I have another dually axle out back that needs rebuilt again, as the 3rd one out there has 460 something gears, and I have the engine to turn 437 gear with ease now, so I don't want to go that direction with the rear gears. I seem to wear out the shaft that goes between the two other spider gears, and this newer carrier doesn't look like it has that shaft, seems like that might have been the fix for that weak spot, but I would have to change out the side gears more than likely unless that C200 uses different axles than the 720. datzenmike
I think pinion mate shaft. On the earlier ones it's a 1 " bar held in place with a roll pin. On the newer ones it's an X or cross with a spider on all four ends. You can see two of them far left and far right center below Quote Link to comment
