SUNRADER LANDON
Hey All, My 720 rwd has some pretty flat leafs, curious if anyone knows if the 2wd rear leafs can be swapped with 4wd leafs? its on a sunrader motorhome. Looking to get the sag out of the leafs, and thought perhaps 4wd leafs would work?? Cheers! 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
All leaf spring are the same length and can be swapped. Do you have dual rear tires? This would be a Cab/Chassis option and the engine tag would begin with a E as in ENL720. If this is the case you have heavy duty springs. There isn't anything stiffer that will support your motor home. If your engine tag does not begin with an E then perhaps someone put this together on softer 2wd springs. If this is a regular 2wd and a camper added the springs would not be up to it. Marked MODEL below. This is a KNLY720 ... K means King Cab, N means Z24, L means left hand drive and Y means 4x4. Yours should say ENL720.... The engine tag is on the inner right fender under the hood hinge. 1 Quote Link to comment
Charlie69
Yes they can be swapped . The 4x4 springs sit on top of the axle and the 2wd springs sit under the axle so you need to flip the spring centering pin and mount the 4x4 springs under the axle. Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
4x4 720 springs will lower a normal 2wd truck a couple inches. While they are stiffer they are actually manufactured with much less arch. They are built to be a flatter spring. I would suggest a different route to achieve your goals. 2 Quote Link to comment
wayno
Can you post a photo of your leaf pack? How many leafs are in your leaf pack? You likely have the best leaf pack there is for a mobile home. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
You likely have the best leaf pack there is for a mobile home. This. Look at the engine tag for the E. These are way stiffer/stronger than 4x4 springs 1 Quote Link to comment
SUNRADER LANDON
Y'all are great! Such quick responses! Good to know I'm not alone! Here's what I know now (will post pics tonight, replacing ball joints and tie rods this eve) I took a look the other day and frankly it looks like the stock 2wd spring with helper springs bolted on. Will check the engine tag for the E. Thanks again ratsun community. 1 Quote Link to comment
SUNRADER LANDON
Oh, yes it's a dually! 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Probably a Cab/Chassis option but dual rims could have been swapped on. Actually would be good as the proper springs are out there and this will solve your sag problem. 1 Quote Link to comment
SUNRADER LANDON
Here's some pics (hopefully this works) Turns out engine tag does say enl720 If K stands for King cab, what does E stand for? <iframe width="480" height="360" src="http://s58.photobucket.com/user/SunraderLandon/embed/slideshow/"></iframe> 1 Quote Link to comment
SUNRADER LANDON
So do y'all think helper springs would be an improvement? Can I flip the axle under these leafs like the 4wd is set up? Cheers! 1 Quote Link to comment
wayno
The easiest and cheapest option is to get a set of 2wd 720 leafs, and pull them apart and cut the eyes off the main leaf right where the eye becomes flat, and then install them as the second leaf of 3 leafs in your leaf pack, this will change the ride in the rear, it will be much FIRMER!!! This conversion will create a second full length leaf like the 620 mobile home leaf pack had. The other option you might try is to buy a set of rear shocks with a coil over setup on it like in the photo below, I have 2 extra leafs in my pack, the coil over shocks, and over load bags also, my truck is made to haul weight. So do y'all think helper springs would be an improvement? Can I flip the axle under these leafs like the 4wd is set up?Cheers! 2 Quote Link to comment

SUNRADER LANDON
Wayno, what could you use to make the cuts on the leafs? I've only got driveway know-how and tools... Also, I don't have much experience with leafs. Essentially you're just adding leafs to the pre existing leafs? Quote Link to comment
SUNRADER LANDON
I was looking into coil overs. Monroe makes what appears to be a decent load adjusting coil over for 60-70 a piece. How much did those bags run you? Did you have to install a compressor for them? Quote Link to comment

Lockleaf
A grinder with a cut off wheel would do it. It would be slow going, but it would work. Quote Link to comment

Also, I don't have much experience with leafs. Essentially you're just adding leafs to the pre existing leafs? Yes, it is just adding leafs, but it is a cheap way to stiffen up a set of leafs, the lighter the vehicle, the more difference it makes in the ride, the heavier the vehicle, the less difference it makes. I cut them with a Dewalt grinder with a cut-off disc, but that is something I have, not sure if a hack saw would work. The 720 leaf pack does have a second leaf that could be used instead of the full length leaf with the eyes cut off, but you would just be adding another leaf that comes up way short of the eye on each end, not the way I would go myself, when I added the 2 extra leafs to my 521 work truck leaf pack, one was full length, the other was between the next 2 leafs. All the heavy duty 720 leaf packs I have are 3 leaf packs, and the 2nd leaf is either full length, or very close to it, if you don't have the tools to cut the eyes off the main leaf, you could go to a spring place and have them make a set for you. I got the bags off a camper van at the wrecking yard, they didn't cost that much, they are filled up with the air compressor I have at my house, they are not adjustable except if the ride is too stiff I can always let air out of them anywhere. datzenmike
The Cab/Chassis leaf pack should have the following leaves. Overall length 1,200mm or 47.24" X 60mm or 2.36" wide and 8mm or 0.31" thick Next spring is shorter in length (unknown) but same width and thickness Third spring is unknown length but same width and 0.55" Fourth is same as above, again probably shorter length and 0.55" thick. The spring rate is 649 lb /in. (the 4x4 spring is only 442 lb/in. The free camber... this is the spring without any load on it, is determined by drawing a line through the two round spring eyelets at each end and measuring down to the pin that holds the pack together. The Cab/Chassis spring has a free camber of 4.51" Quote Link to comment
SUNRADER LANDON
I'm grateful to have found such a wealth of knowledge... Next paycheck depending, I may tackle this spring issue and add some leafs, along with cool over shocks. Quote Link to comment
wayno
OK, I don't count the flat overload leafs at the bottom on 720 leaf packs, there are 2 of them, I only count the leafs that have a curve to them when not loaded when I talk about leaf packs, sure they are part of the leaf pack, but they are over load leafs. Don't change a bunch of things at the same time, you could go from tuna boat(soft) to dump truck(hard) real fast, only change one thing at a time. On my work truck I added the coil over shocks first, that didn't fix it, so then I added the 2 extra leafs, that worked great for all my pressure washing equipment in the box I had on the back of the truck in the photo below, then when I turned my truck into a flatbed, I added the bags so I could carry way more weight, but they have no air in them unless I am hauling something heavy, I plan ahead. 1 Quote Link to comment

On my truck I bought those Monroe coil over shocks off of Amazon and they were 90 bucks for the pair. They seem to raise the back end an inch or two. 1 Quote Link to comment
