SkooGAR
Hey folks so I have a 1981, 2WD, Datsun 720:http://community.ratsun.net/topic/68791-jimmy-and-the-greenhouse/ It currently has a 4 Speed Tree Shift and I am dying to set it up with a 5 speed transmission of sorts as these 60 Km/Hr speed limits are absolutely killing my car.So damn over the awkward gearing especially because there is so many damn hills around. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Not sure what your motives are. A five speed won't help you climb hills. 60Km is about 45 mph so 3rd or 4th gears for them. 1 Quote Link to comment
racerx
Probably better off with a 4 speed, climbing hills, and 5th gear is just highway gear anyway. 1 Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
The main advantage to swapping in an overdrive 5 speed trans would be that you could then re-gear the differential with lower (higher numerical) gears. The same top speed would be achieved, but the lower gears would help when you need the torque. 1 Quote Link to comment
DanielC
I have done a five speed swap in a 521. The main advantages of a five speed swap on that truck was closer gear rations in all the gears. The overdrive was a small bonus. The disadvantage was a slightly higher first gear. If you have the L-18 engine, any L series transmission will bolt to the engine. That includes the early Z-cars, 240,260, 280 cars. 3 Quote Link to comment
