Left hand clutches and shifts. Ultimately, yes that was the solution to the initial dangers. I believe only a few pre-war and wartime bikes had the clutch lever seperate. Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak Posted September 20, 2016 Report Share Posted September 20, 2016 Being that I've gone with a 4spd Auto, won't be a safety issue for me. Oh, cool! Didn't know they made automatic transmissions for these types of engines. Actually, the only ones I've ever even seen were the "Hondamatic" transmissions on the CB bikes. :P Quote Link to comment
petercscherer Posted September 21, 2016 Author Report Share Posted September 21, 2016 I'm using a Qiye brand 70cc engine, it's an oddball aftermarket motor that is actually incredibly well built. It has the 4spd auto, which is very odd since almost all aftermarket motors are manuals. Quote Link to comment

I not only skimmed over the area that got cut down and welded, but also filled in the edges to hide the flanges, so it's smooth all the way around. I applied my 2K Filler Primer tonight, and tomorrow should be doing some final sanding and priming. House of Kolor Orion Silver base, Stratto Blue Topcoat, Ed Roth Surfite Silver Flakes, 2k Glamour Clear Coat. Quite a bit of sanding/buffing next, but I'm super excited about the color and finish! petercscherer Posted September 24, 2016 Author Report Share Posted September 24, 2016 Moving forward: The tank is finished getting polished, pinstriping is next on the list! I'm not sure why the color seems to have a green tint to it in these pics, but it is true-blue in real life. I'm very satisfied with it, and going forward it should be wicked cool! Got the bike fully torn down. Frame is now fully media-blasted and prepping for paint. In the meantime, I didn't like the look of an all black engine, so I carefully prepped all surfaces and sprayed the engine in the same paint as the tank! We'll have to see how temp-resistant this paint is... Wheels and tires are going to take awhile to clean and polish, and I still have to decide what color all my parts are going to get painted, but this is moving along very quickly. ~Peter 2 Quote Link to comment

petercscherer Posted September 28, 2016 Author Report Share Posted September 28, 2016 Update: While the frame and parts are curing, I'm now turning my attention to polishing and detailing. Here's the front wheel assembly all polished and ready to go! Rear wheel is in-progress. I also need to polish the front forks tomorrow, I use a full-size buffing wheel for them because they're really easy to work with, the wheels had to be done by hand and with a Magic Ball Rotary Buffer. Misc Parts painted and ready to go! Exhaust is painted with a silver-metallic BBQ Grill Paint, and then some Very-High-Temp (VHT) clear-coat. Wrapped because I needed to cover up some ugly welds... I considered going with a silver metallic frame, but since I just did that on my last build, I opted for something different on this one. Black basecoat with Silver Flake. Frame is curing, once I finish polishing other parts, I'll get it back on the table and begin assembly! The build is really chugging along now, once I get the frame on the table, it's just as simple as bolting everything back up and getting final details like wiring sorted. The tank and side-cover were dropped off at the Pinstriper's today, he should turn out some awesome artwork by the end of the week! :D ~Peter 2 Quote Link to comment

petercscherer Posted October 3, 2016 Author Report Share Posted October 3, 2016 Update: I was gone at Good-Guys Fort Worth all weekend, so only just now got a chance to work on the bike again. Before I update y'all, here's a few pics from the show: Once I got home, I wrapped up some final assembly on the bike. Exhaust installed: Changed out the cheapo Pit-Bike grips for a pair of early Honda CB grips; they fixed my throttle issues, and also look way better! Kill Switch installed: Wiring Harness all tied up in place: Front Brakes installed and set-up initially, I'll adjust further once it's on the ground. Once I get the bike running, I'll test the remaining wires on the harness to determine where my 12-volts are for my lights. There's no definitive wiring diagram for this exact motor so I need to test manually once it's operational. Already have a place to mount the switch, so that will happen once we're running/driving. Tank should be done getting pinstriped tomorrow, and then it's on to installing the fuel system and getting it running!~Peter 5 Quote Link to comment

petercscherer Posted October 3, 2016 Author Report Share Posted October 3, 2016 DONE!After picking up and installed the tank and side-cover, I drained the shipping-oil, and installed new break-in oil. 98 octane fuel in the tank and it started on the 3rd kick. THE 3RD KICK!! Ran like a brand-new bike! Been driving it all afternoon to break it in, no issues, no leaks, and the blue paint on the engine is holding up just fine to the high temps! Comparison of the stock SL/XL 70 to the custom hard-tail: Final thoughts for now:Exhaust- really deep and mellow. Quieter than the stock SL70, but seems to flow better, good throttle response, and no issues with leaks. Engine- Pretty torquey, good power, starts on one kick now. Shifts into gear just fine, down-shifting is a bit stiff, but having the shift-lever makes it effortless. Foot shifter was too stiff. Seat/Suspension- Actually really comfortable! I took it onto the street in front of our shop and drove it at about 35mph and had no issues with road bumps over a short distance trip. Even drove it on the gravel lot in out backyard and was again impressed with the ride. Not bad at all! I'll iron out a few bugs this week, but overall I'm done with the bike for now. I'll be cleaning my workspace, and prepping things for the next build! I may start a new thread for that build, but I'll keep updating this thread as it gets perfected!Sweet! ~Peter 7 Quote Link to comment
