Lets assume the engine tune is not the cause for a minute.

This leaves lack of air or lack of water flow/heat transfer to the air.

Poor air flow...

Do you have the fan shroud in place? Shrouds increase the fan's cooling efficiency.

Do you have a clutch fan? It should turn by hand but be very firm to turn. If loose, the silicon oil has leaked out and the fan will not reach it's intended 1,500 RPMs @ 4,000 water pump pulley speed.

Fan blades broken?

Are the rad fins plugged with road debris, leaves and bugs?

Are fins missing from the tubes? damage?

Poor water flow...

If tap water is used crusty hard water scale deposits will clog the rad tubes. Open rad cap and look. Use only distilled water and a good antifreeze/coolant.

Look at lower rad hose while revving the engine... does the hose collapse from water pump suction because it's too soft? Hoses rot from the inside out and my look fine.

Have you by-passed the heater core by joining the two heater hoses? This is a no no as the water going through the heater (now missing) is not going through the rad and returns to the engine still hot. Just block the flow somehow.

Fan belt slipping or oily/damaged?

Is there unexplained coolant loss? Head gasket may be blown or blowing compression into the cooling system and over pressurizing it and expelling water..

Most common problem is faulty thermostat. Don't waste your time testing... you have to remove and replace the gasket anyway... replace with a new one. No $3 WallMart crap, spend $10-$12 on a good quality one.

Well if you're in Perth it's probably 105degrees and desert climate, so maybe throw down some $$$ to get a proper Koyorad 2 row radiator and get some electric fans that are thermostatically triggered installed, so it creates a cooling cycle, forget the stock fan or clutch fan this is not the 1970's, you get caught in modern day traffic stuck at a light you're bound to boil you're carbs from sitting there.

Perhaps define HOT. Get an Infra Red 'gun' and shoot the thermostat housing when you think it's hot. See what it says. 185-190 is ok. Datsuns are designed to operate in tropical climates but for this you must pay more attention to your cooling system needs.

Electric fans are not going to help a clogged radiator, faulty thermostat or a by passed heater core. So check those first.

If this is a problem with vapor lock or 'boiling the carbs' this isn't the engine over heating. It's just high under hood temps and that happens if it's hot out

My 510 1971 year with L18 runs hot why

Need more info.

Every body, just remember!  In Japan it is customary, and sometimes required by manufacturer's warranty, that every morning before starting the engine, the driver must check the oil and water level before attempting to start the vehicle!  This is the primary reason that the early Mazda rotary engined vehicles were so successful in Japan and failed in the USA!  A friend of mine in Montana followed the DVM guideines and despite minus 40 temperatures in winter never had any problems with his early Mazda rotary sedan!  Not to say his Renault did not!  But that's another story!  Apparently French and customer savvyy Japanese Engineers have different priorities when attenpting to conquer the world!

Never had elect. Fan on my ol skool.cars and never overheat. I sometimes get stuck in traffic in hot days and never over heat (Down town sj) except when my tstat went out on 65 mustang and datsun 510. Also had 75 celica w stock rad and overheated cuz fuel was too lean.

Use an IR gun (infra red) and shoot the thermostat housing for a truer reading. It should be 180 -185F. First and cheapest thing to do is replace your thermostat with a new one. Not a $2.99 special. Nothing like spending hundreds on a three core rad and find out it didn't help because of a $5 thermostat failure.

tell us how hot hot is

is the gauge at 3/4 so you think its hot or is it running 210 and is hot

my stock gauge reads 3/4 at 180 degrees on a autometer after market gauge

what is the actual temp you are getting ?
