I've seen them on 720 4x4s, but nothing else. Is it even still a viable damper?

I'm on a 720 4x4 an 84 to be exact and I mean if I knew where it went I would get a new damper. I'm trying to tie up all the loose ends on my truck little by little down to the windshield washer nozzle I finally got last week.

Well that would make sense that it has one then :). I will take a look at one of mine tomorrow, see if I can get some decent pics of it for you.

Thank you very much! I have tried googling for pictures of where they go but nothing :/ it's been bugging me for months.

Lol all good thank you, I just got a new instrument cluster from the junk yard, they got an 84 in yesterday! Scored a few things like this cluster with the clock in it so I'm trying to get my speedo to work, I can spin the cable at the transfer and it work's but when I plug it in, nothing any ideas? Also it's a rwd so it didn't have that damper

I think only the 4x4 had them. (maybe wrong) This was to counter the tremendous torque placed on the engine transmission when in lo range when slowing down in gear or descending a hill. Usually there is a support on the rear of the transmission that the exhaust is clamped to. The transmission damper bolts tho this. In the picture below near the thumb you can see the two holes for a U bolt to hold the exhaust pipe. If the exhaust gas been replaced or the transmission out, it's not unusual for this to not be put back on.

So I have to get another piece? Also do you know why that speedo might not be working? Never had a working one in this truck I have the piece in the transfer and the cable spins the speedo when not plugged in. Sorry different topic

The ferule on the end of the cable is 'keyed' and only locks the cable in one position.

Maybe trans isn't turning the cable?

Plug the trans end of the inner flexible speedo cable into the speedometer pinion inside the trans case. Place transmission in neutral, raise a rear tire and have someone turn the drive shaft while you watch. Does it turn?

I'll try this when my roommate gets home. If it doesn't work guessing it's the gear? I can't find a new one, will one work from a transmission speedo car or does it have to be another 4wd?

You may be able to still get that gear from Nissan.

Probably pretty expensive? I'll see if I can get the one from a truck or 2 at the junkyard they still have about 3 of them including the 84 they just got, if they don't work I'll call nissan.

Does the gear just pull out?

I park with the passenger tires on a curb when I mess with these. Keeps the Tcase slanted away from the hole you are opening in the side of it.

Still want pics? Seems like Mike's pics covered it pretty well.

No thanks I got it, I found that piece on a rwd but no spot for the damper also how does that gear pull out? I took out the bolt but when I tried to get the gear it didn't budge. I tried to pop it.loose with a flat head and broke the bolt part and then grabbed it with pliers and broke a chunk off. Kinda butt hurt

It's just slid in. No retainer beyond the tab the bolt holds in place. A little bit off twisting could help?

I'm gonna try that next time. Got a Weber carb on today, traded one of my smog carbs for it, thing runs flippin amazing now, no more popping, idles much better, everything, so happy.

There is a 10mm bolt holding it in place. Do not twist it, to remove. Pull straight out. Maybe a very slight wiggle. Oh yeah, level the car or oil will pour out.

yea idk why my speedo wasnt working  lol gonna go back to the yard wednesday and pull the set out of that other truck so i can pull  the gear itself out of it for mine
