ToxicDepression Posted June 27, 2016 Report Share Posted June 27, 2016 i just bought my 84 720 and the two front tires were worn down to the thread and cambering really bad and the front tires were locked, so i had the truck taken to get it re aligned. after the tires were replaced and finished the realignment then they were not acting up for a bit. if i didnt drive the truck often then it would lock up again and i would have to lock the hub caps for 4-wheel drive to get it going then i could pull off and put it back to standard 2-wheel drive to work. any ideas to do? Did you raise the front wheels and try to spin them? First.... what have you replaced or done to the brake system lately? if anything. Second... what have you done to the truck lately. ToxicDepression Posted June 27, 2016 Author Report Share Posted June 27, 2016 yes I have jacked the front tire up and it will spin by hand. i have only had the tires re aligned, they said that they put these "tab things" (cant remember what the name is for them) on because the camber was so bad. I tried to bleed the breaks, didnt work... and also checked the rotors and break pads and they are still good. could something be shot and cause the problems with the ball joints or tie rods? not sure if this will help but i noticed that the e-brake doesn't work, but thats not on the front that i can see of. I just bought the truck not too long ago and have slowly been working on the carb but haven't really done anything to the breaks or tires except the re alignment, little bit of bleeding the lines, and new tires. I dont know much on the suspension/breaking/tie rods, etc... area. im hoping it could be a bad part that I can replace. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike Posted June 27, 2016 Report Share Posted June 27, 2016 If the tire spins, how is it 'locked up' not following. Bad camber that needs correcting is likely from the truck being either lowered or raised beyond the stock settings. 'Shims' is probably what was used to correct the camber. Quote Link to comment
ToxicDepression Posted June 27, 2016 Author Report Share Posted June 27, 2016 thats what im trying to figure out, maybe something is shot and will spin when off the ground, but when weight is applied maybe it will "kink" and lock up....... when it is stuck then i cant push it forward but itll push backwards with no problem....... datzenmike Posted June 27, 2016 Report Share Posted June 27, 2016 Remove the front drive shaft. This eliminates the transfer case as the cause. Maybe the front end is in Lo while the rest of the truck is in Hi. Shifting to 4x4 resets it. Quote Link to comment

Stoffregen Motorsports Posted June 27, 2016 Report Share Posted June 27, 2016 I've also seen people put the shoes in wrong. There's a leading edge and a trailing edge on some shoes and if they are put in backwards, they tend to grab and sort of self-actuate. If the truck has been sitting for a while, it's possible that the brake hydraulic system is clogged and or rusted. When you bled the brakes, did you get any fluid out of the calipers or wheel cylinders? Quote Link to comment
ToxicDepression Posted June 27, 2016 Author Report Share Posted June 27, 2016 @lockleaf, no if it just hasnt been ran in a while(give or take two days) than I will need to either back up about 25 feet or put it into 4-wheel drive in order to have it gain momentum to "free" up then i can take it out of 4-wheel drive.... @STOFFREGEN MOTORSPORTS, yes when i bleed the lines it was mainly to check and see if there was fluid going through it or not. but yes there was indeed fluid that bleed freely..... I will see if i can remove the front drive shaft to see if that fixes the problem... Quote Link to comment

datzenmike Posted June 28, 2016 Report Share Posted June 28, 2016 If the hubs are locked it will only spin the front differential and driveshaft. It ends at the transfer case. Any 4x4 running in HI or LO has to be selected by the transfer case shifter. Assuming it is functioning properly. The reason for the hubs being unlocked is to save gas. It takes power to spin the axles, diff and driveshaft. If not in 4x4 it's disconnected or should be. Removing the driveshaft will show of it's transfer case or brake related. Quote Link to comment
