Rear shoes should be same as roadster

http://www.datsun-roadster-parts.com/index.php?id=41&page=4

.

Those aren't the same. Was going to go to pull a part today but it's raining like a mofo.

When you gonna take me along for a ride redeye?

As soon as the brakes work?

The upholstery guy is right across the hwy from you. You want me to ask him about recovering those 620 seats? I'll be up that way on Thursday to pick mine up and could ask him then.

No,,, i'm right on this newb.. The extra bump you see on shoes is because ,,, ( i believe)  they fit early 510s also and that is the holes for the round hold down springs  that aren't used on the 411 or roadsters.

Could we get datsunfreaks official ruling on this matter please?

I rockauto-ed 510 brake shoes and they are quite a bit cheaper than the ones in the link earlier

To me, looks identical to a 510/610 except the very inner edge of the shoe metal..

But, Rockauto says the 510 shoes only fit a 610 and 710, so...

Odd they don't even list a brake shoe for an RL411...

I'd bet the 510 shoes fit though. Inner drum diameter? Drum diameter and shoe width are all that really matters. All the little mounting holes can be tweaked with a little gumption...

Messing with the air cleaner, I had to hack the old wingnut off and messed up the already stripped bolt. Not sure what they were thinking with this design. I really need to find the correct size bolt but this one is in there for now and not going anywhere.

Fucking mess... but it's functional at least. Rear brakes are next on the list after I research replacement parts.

240Z wing nuts are slightly longer but fit just fine.  Getting the rubber gasketed thrust washers [for a better name] between the wing nut and the intake filter cover is also 240Z units.  I know from personal useage.

Drum diameter is 9" and the pads are about 1-5/8" across although that is really the metal part.... mostly lol

I honestly believe that original [i don't trust the later mislabeld "510"s] 1968 era 510 rear drums have a high probability of being the same fit and function Why change an in production part if you don't have to given vehicle weight and engine Horse Power?

Get the shoes rebuilt, a lot of places can just fit new material to them, even giving you an option of pad material i.e race spec or street

As for the cylinders, dont just rely on a parts website, these cars are ancient, and usually a few models shared same parts

Would rather keep the motor SAE... and my next statement will be ironic.

This.

Lots of specialist shops offer this service.

You guys are boring.

I am going to pull a part to see what I can find.......  as soon as it stops raining

Just looking at options, but I am thinking the rear brakes from the same car I sourced the front brakes from, will be almost bolt in (with some Miller magic box action)

I am going to take a look at the Metro master cylinder as well as it is a short dual circuit unit.

So now all the brakes will be metric

Hell, I would have told you to do this first...   ^_^

Swap to metric lines, fit 510 wheel cylinders, etc. This was the plan with my Roadster...

If you're not in a huge rush, I can measure some B210 shoes this weekend and see how they go? Looks about right for the size. 9" drum is pretty standard on Datsun sedans...

I hate to be a repeat on this subject BUT Datsunparts.com sells an original JDM Nissan part number master brake cylinder[with the warning that the outlet is on the wrong side for the JDM 1500cc roadster] that is a bolt in replacement for the RL411 or WRL411 brake master cylinder!  The trick is that you need to take advantage of my superannuated brain and realize that a JDM Datsun 1500 roaster brake master cylinder that has the outlet connector on the wrong side for the JDM 1500cc roadster just happens to be on the correct side for the export RL411 sedans.  Mine fit up perfectly and works like a charm.

I would appreciate the measurements.

Still think it will be easier to go rear disc than rear drum, at least for me.  Part ordering simplicity and availability are also important. There is also cost, I can go to picknpull and get the rest of the parts I need for $100. I can order all the parts new for about $100 more than the cost of new shoes and wheel cylinders on the link Nanners posted.  That and when I need to replace anything front or rear it will all be from the same car, a 93 Infiniti. :)

...and my deadline is June 8th, gotta be able to drive it to Canby. That is basically all this car is for

This still leaves me with a single circuit master cylinder. If I am getting a new master it will be a dual circuit unit. I want this car to be as safe as possible, 2 of my favorite people ride in this to Canby with me. :)

Looks like the rain may be letting up a bit today. I'll get some measurements and report back.

FOR FUCKS SAKE!!

1970 510

411 drum on 510 before shoe removal ,, obviously holes are too small for drum to go all the way on.

,,

I had real good pair of OG 411 brakeshoes that came with the red car so i used them with "new" roadster rearend when i switched it out ( as you can see) BUT i used 70-71 510 wheel cylinders because they were massively cheaper than SAE replacements.

Both shoes on floor

510 shoes on 411 ,,, notice i didn't even change 510 springs for he 411 ones

j0vgVAj.jpg

Drum back on with 510 shoes in place,, with 510 wheel cylinder ( insert snarky lol )

SJ1epkS.jpg

If i hadn't had good brakeshoes on the red 411 already, i would have bought roadster 510 shoes. ( i actually didn't notice the roadster place was selling 510 shoes as roadster ones till you pointed out they weren't exactly like the ones on your wagon)

Trust me ,, i may have only had a driving 411 for about a year but i have owned a "project" before my 16 year olds were born just never was able to throw money at it till some dingleberry paid waaaay to much for my lizard mobile.. . my neighbor Juan-ear has owned his since the late 90s and my friend Bill drag races his in the 1/8th mile and they both were extreme roadster owners....  I built that goofy 510 cuz it was cheap to buy parts for. NOT because i wanted one.

I just assumed, i figure if you're going for cool factor ,  vented looks and sounds way cooler

What kinda brakes you got on that thing??

Welp,, , i got Four wheel vented disc brakes!

See,,  that rolls off the tongue as smoothly as a 19 year old college girl

No switching drums, that's just plane sideways...

These here Altima brakes look like they will be the ticket. Same part numbers as the Infinti ones. I will need to swap the caliper sides to move the ebrake to the rear to match up with the stock linkage.

The Metro master is almost perfect, exactly the same length as the stock 411 one. The mounting configuration is horizontal, but I can work with that I think.

Just remember!  Ingenuity and patience will come up with a real world solution!  That and rat's nesting every part you replace so that it can be rebuilt when Renault thinks that you don't matter anymore. I have saved every original 1967 RL411 part that I have had to replace for the last 49 years so that I could restore my car to "as delivered" configuration, down to the original spark plugs, their  numbered wire harness, distributor cap, and yes even the original distributor rotor.  No, I did not save the original oil change drippings.  But I do have the original spark plugs.  Talk about authenticity!!!
