ka24/280zx hybrid trans in 510 which speed sensor

Recommended Posts

as the title states, im running a ka24de transmission from a 240sx(s14) with my LZ22 and im curious as to which speed sensor i use to run a cable driven speedometer(stock). the ka24de trans speed sensor is for an electronic speedometer(electronic harness). i tried fitting the stock 4 speed sensor in, but it stuck out too far and im pretty sure the gear would get chewed up.

Better not call it a speed sensor. The 240sx had them and they are electric for an electric speedometer. All others are mechanical and drive a cable are called the speedometer pinion sleeve. This is the assembly that holds the speedometer pinion that has the gear teeth on it.

First are you happy with your current speedometer reading or is it fast or slow. If not accurate now is the time to select one with more or fewer teeth to speed it up or slow it down. Your speedometer mat be inaccurate because of a differential change or taller tires.

If everything is fine take your old speedometer sleeve out and count the teeth. This way you can look for one that fits the KA transmission and has the same number of teeth.

well ive never had the speedometer read accurately in general, i just wanted to use it. troy ermish helped me take measurements and we looked around and figured out that any z car 5 speed pinion sleeve worked. and my apologies for the incorrect terminology. not exactly my specialty. haha

The zx speedometer pinion came in several sizes to reflect the differential and tire sizes of the zx. If your speedometer is reading fast you can select one with more teeth and this will slow it down, if too slow, fewer teeth to speed it up.

The original 510 tire and differential used a 17 tooth I believe. If you are running a taller tire you may need a 16 tooth

The zx pinion sleeve assemblies are:

32702-R5616.... 16 tooth

32702-R5617.... 17 tooth

32702-R5618.... 18 tooth

i just did this on my 620 last week..

i used the pinion from my previous 5 speed. it was an fs5w71b from an 80 720 that had an l20. the length of the pinion and where the oring sat was the same as the electro thingy from the s13 trans.

popped it in, and the speedo is working. accuracy might be another thing, but its close... i forget the colors for the gears that goes to what gearing the rear axle has.

hit up the salvage yards and look for the drive from an l-series trans. preferably 5 speeds? dunno..

I swapped an '85 diesel tailstock onto my '79 280zx 5 speed to get the shorter shift and the reverse check sleeve. To use the pre '80 speedometer pinion sleeve I had to cut a new key way 180 degrees from the old one and mount it upside down.
