DATSUN411
Hello everybody!! So I got my 411 running a month or so ago and have been enjoying driving it around until today! I was trying to make it out to my first car show and on my way my transmission got stuck in 4th gear! I tried for a while to get it out of gear before I had it towed home. I plan on pulling it out tomorrow. I'm just wondering if this is an easy transmission to rebuild/replace or if there is a 5 speed that would just be easier/cheaper. On a side note I do own a 79 620 I could steal from if that's a viable option? Any help is appreciated as always! Quote Link to comment
Draker
Could be a few things. One of the dog clutch detents could have popped out locking it in 4th. Quote Link to comment

DATSUN411
What motor is in ur car? Oh sorry its a J13... Quote Link to comment
kelowg
U might get lucky,my 210 wagon did this. Was clutch disc spring wedged between pp and disc. Although if like 521 4 sp,has removable pan for ezier access. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Early J13 used this, it came in floor shift or column.... Floor shift Column Later 520/L521 J13 with F4W63L These are the same basic transmission used by the PL521, first year 620, also on the 510 sedan and goon BUT with the L series bolt pattern.. 2 Quote Link to comment
DATSUN411
So I guess mine has been swapped out at some point for the later model as that is what it looks like. I have yet to get a chance to pull it out. If I get off early tomorrow I'm gonna get to it. I'll keep you all informed as I get farther! Thanks Mike for the pics!! Quote Link to comment
difrangia
I believe that the transmission in bottom photo has a pan on the bottom that can be pulled off to get a look inside. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Yes it does, unlikely that will help. I had a 521 (same style transmission) and it stuck in 4th one day, 40 miles from home. Even if I could have gotten it out there's no guarantee that it wouldn't do it again at a worse time. Quote Link to comment
DATSUN411
Is there any schematics for that transmission? I can't seem to get it out of the car now... Its stuck on the shaft and since its stuck if 4th gear the rear is hitting the cars cross brace! FML! Can I take it apart in the middle without causing any crazy problems? Or do I have the pull the motor to get it out? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
That I don't know but if you can find a similar J series that's great. Even a L series from a 521 or 510 will go if you take the guts out and swap them into your case. It's a bit of work but those L 4 speeds are common and give away. Quote Link to comment
Draker
Ask Bob3. Maybe he has one or two 4 speeds. I'd give you mine.. if you were closer. 1 Quote Link to comment
DATSUN411
Ask Bob3. Maybe he has one or two 4 speeds. I'd give you mine.. if you were closer. I may hit you up about that in the future!! I have plans to move back to Reno in July, so if I don't find a way to fix it before then I may just make a trip for it!! Quote Link to comment
DATSUN411
The transmission is out as of a couple days ago. I took off the access panel and didn't see anything chunky so that was good... It did have ugly lube as it looked to have friction material in it. My buddy took it to his transmission shop but they really only work on autos, so he is sending it to a friends shop............ Now I'm waiting... Quote Link to comment
DATSUN411
So I guess I'm paying $650 to get this rebuilt.... Seems like a lot, but I'm kinda in a hurry so it is what it is I guess. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Ask for the old parts back. This will help keep them honest 1 Quote Link to comment
