EastBay521
So im not sure what happened. I was planning on using a KA5 speed behind my Lseries in my 521. so I got the bell housing machined(thanks to uberkevin for hooking me up with that) and put it on the new tranny after replacing the counter shaft bearing. Once the trans was back together with the new bell housing it would not shift into 1st or 2nd as I was warned by troy ermish(he left a bad taste in my mouth but he was the only one I could find who would mod the bell housing) but went into all other gears just fine. So I took the bell housing back off and drilled out the hole for the shift rod for 1st and 2nd and slapped it back together the same way I did it the first time. Only now the damn thing only goes into 5th gear and doest not turn when its in 5th. Any ideas on what happened? Id like to take a shot at fixing it my self before I lug it to the shop and have my grandfather help me out while he tells me how stupid I am. Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
Maybe the shift forks weren't in proper neutral when it went back together this last time, so it's not really where you think it should be when move the shifter. 2 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Goes into gear but can you drive it? Does the vehicle move? Take out of 5th and try turning the input shaft .... If the output turns you are in another gear and the forks are misaligned as stated. This is easy to do when assembling the tail to the rest of the transmission. I believe the correct way is to align the shift forks, Place the shifter in the neutral position and rotate and hold over to the far right. Then lower the tail into place while making sure the shift rod engages the shift forks in the neutral position. 2 Quote Link to comment
EastBay521
Its on the work bench not in the vehicle yet. I will spin the input shaft while in neutral tomorrow and see what happens with the output shaft. Thank you 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If already in a gear it will turn. It is impossible to be in two gears and turn. Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
With the ball detents, it should be impossible to be in two gears. Sometimes a trans gets slightly bound up when the cases are installed, usually from the synchros being pressed onto the gears. Try smacking the input and tailshaft with a hard rubber mallet to free everything up. 1 Quote Link to comment
EastBay521
Output shaft spins when I turn input while in neutral Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Then it's already in a gear. I've had a transmission apart and you can shift the rods by hand and get two gears engaged to lock the transmission to loosen the mainshaft nut. Quote Link to comment
q-tip
Solution, take trans back apart and ensure that each fork is in neutral position. 1 Quote Link to comment
