Iamandy4206
So I have a 1986 Nissan 720. But it's the early model with carburetor. I bought the truck with 101k miles and nown it has about 103k. So I was driving one day and it just puttered out and died. I got it running enough to take it home. But it was still puttering like it was starving for fuel. So I replaced the fuel pump. Checked the filter and it looked good (newish). I did the accelerator pump and inginition control module in the dizzy. I also replaced could and all the spark plugs and wires. Did dizzy cap and rotor. So now it warms up and starts to putter. My next thing I'm thinking is my ignition relay. It gets hot to the touch and I checked the cool inside and one of the lead wires looks bad. Maybe that could be it? I'm so lost with this damn truck. Anuhelo would be apprieciated. Thanks Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
STOP. Trouble shoot the problem and fix what is not working. You're just replacing everything hoping to get lucky is wasted effort and expensive. It's common for the Z24 to blow the head gasket at 100K. A compression test may show two adjacent cylinders lower that the others. Does it need the coolant topping up every week? Quote Link to comment
Iamandy4206
Lmao no more inernetting for me. It's not a blow headgasket..... if for sure know. And i don't think it's possible to blow aabheadgasket in 11k miles. The issue is. When it gets warm or "operating" temp it runs like shit. I did notice the ignition relay is getting to hit to touch so I figure that might be it. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If the head gasket has never been changed it's very possible that it could blow. Z24s are known for this at about 100K. If the gasket was changed it's still possible for it to blow if not done properly or if the head is warped and the cause the first time. Your build date is stamped on the door jam sticker. The '85 model year 720 have build dates of June '84 through April of '85 The '86 model year 720 have build dates of May '85 through Oct. '85. The '86 model year 720 shares the year with the '86.5 D21 Hardbody that began it's ('86.5) model year production in Nov '85. How many wires on the plug at the back of the carb? If a carb and it runs ok when cold and not so well when warm there are things that it could be.When cold, the choke is on forcing a rich condition during warm up. IF the carb is running lean from, say a blocked primary jet, it will be masked by the choke being on. When the choke warms and turns off, the existing lean condition causes the poor idle/performance. Poor idle can also be from a dirty EGR valve that does not close properly. You can lift the valve off it's seat with your finger nail and let drop back into place dislodging any deposits. There is no EGR during idle so the valve should be closed. Did you check that both coils are firing? How did you do this??? Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
Have you actually checked visually for fuel supply? Like disconnecting the fuel line from the carb and pumping it in to a container? Quote Link to comment
