Too late now but you don't have to set TDC to change a head gasket as long as you mark the cam sprocket to chain so it goes back together the same. The distributor and the drive spindle position would also need to be memorized and them put back in the same position. TDC is just simpler.

Loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt but don't remove it. The last thing before you take the timing cover off to fix the loose tensioner is turn the crank pulley till the timing scale pointer is at zero (TDC) Now you can remove the bolt. Tap the back side of the pulley with a large socket repeatedly and it will slowly move forward and off the crank. DO NOT hammer it. I've never had to use a puller on them.

Disconnect battery. Drain coolant and remove rad. Loosen alternator adjusting strap from timing cover and swing out of the way. Distributor, water and oil pump have to be removed. Between the oil pump and distributor is the drive spindle, this usually falls out which is fine. There are several 10mm bolts that hold the bottom of the head to the top of the timing chain cover. Loosen/remove the front oil pan bolts that enter the timing chain cover plus  half way down each side so the pan can drop slightly for clearance.
