Lockleaf
^^^ this. Oil pump and dizzy must come out. Front cover has a bolt that is competely hidden behind the oil pump. I busted that corner off a front cover the very first time I tried pulling one of these apart. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
So you're assuming the tensioner fell out or did you confirm this? If the tensioner is good then you can check the cam timing per post #14. The cam can be moved by blocking the tensioner and re positioning the sprocket and turning the cam to fit it. Then check the timing as per #14 again. If taking the timing cover off have near TDC, remove the rad, remove alternator tensioner strap, oil pump, (and the drive spindle above it) water pump, distributor (by the two bolts) loosen the crank pulley bolt then set TDC on #1, remove pulley by tapping on the back side with a socket (DO NOT HAMMER!) and it will work itself forward and off, (watch for woodruf keys that may fall out) loosen the front oil pan bolts and 6-8 inches down each side so it can drop to allow the timing cover to slip forward and out, there are two 10mm bolts on the bottom front of the head down into the timing cover also. Timing cover should have a new crank seal put in it before it goes back on, rather than in two months when it starts dripping. Behind the chain cover is a funny looking washer on the crank snout. This is the oil slinger, take note which way it goes on. 1 Quote Link to comment
KnuckleBuster
Alright so, after much frustration of getting it apart (Its a homemade 25 yr old tractor, it's the most ghetto rigged set up you could imagine) the tensioner was indeed the problem. Everything is fixed and back together properly timing chain wise, just put the cover back on, and i wanted to ask if there's a specific way the oil pump and dizzy need to go back together. I'm assuming reverse procedure or does the oil pump need to go in first? The cam is at the proper position and cylinder 1 is at TDC. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Yes. Put the drive spindle into the oil pump and install so that when looking down the distributor end you see this... (probably will take a few tries) Note there is a large and small half moon shape (as noted above) and the blade is almost at 11:30 but not quite. About 11:25. Finish installing and tightening the oil pump bolts, the distributor will fit and still be timed where you had it. It can only go in one way. Quote Link to comment
