shacks510
Never understood low compression turbo engines. If not boosting it's a 7.8 compression running dog. Didn't you say stock L16 with U67 head has like 6.7:1? Quote Link to comment

That4doorKiD
All depends on the size of the turbocharger, idk what you mean most of the time we drive off boost. About all modern cars spool around 2.3k RPM that come stock turbo. I usually drive above 3k no matter what I'm doing, idk how low you keep your motor. Quote Link to comment
wayno
I am under boost most the time, likely even while idling, but it is to little to see on the boost gauge, but I have diesels, they are different and need most the boost below 2500rpms. I can without a doubt say this, I didn't have near the torque starting out in the 720 when I blew the intake system vacuum valve apart when I hit 15psi once on the freeway and I had to drive home without the turbocharger working, it was gutless. The ducting system on the 720 also popped apart towing my 320 to Blue Lake that one year(12psi?), I had to fix it on the road, it had no power, and my max RPM is 3000rpms as it sounds funny/over revved above that. I believe that gas engine turbos need to be matched to the gas engines perfectly to get max performance, while the diesel engine has a little fudging room, it really depends on what one is looking for, speed, power, or mileage, my 521 cruises down the freeway great at 75mph but doesn't really have a lot of torque, while my heavy 720 has a shitload of torque but I have to put my foot into it to reach the same speeds as the 521. Smaller turbos spin up faster than large turbos. Quote Link to comment

In your quote by me, I'm referring to the quote directly above my post... From my Archives: Turbo 2.2L[/size] 7.87:1 Compression ratio with 45.2cc open chambered head. Parts: Z22 crank, 2.2E pistons, Z22S/L20B rods in Z22block or Z20/L20B block bored +2mm, s/2+r+p: 224.4 piston deck height: -3.45 (below block) A stock L16 with stock 210 head is 8.58 compression. The above, with an L20B U67 (open chamber, because there were no closed ones) head is 7.72 The above with a closed chamber head is 8.21 Quote Link to comment

About all modern cars spool around 2.3k RPM that come stock turbo. I usually drive above 3k no matter what I'm doing, idk how low you keep your motor. I'm saying most of the time you are not boosting on the street because there is no need to. We are simply driving. The only time would possibly be accelerating from a stop and as there is likely traffic, you are not doing that much or for long, or pulling out out on the highway but there you are most likely quickly cruising at or near the speed limit. So what's left? Start your car and leave the driveway, drive out of suburbs and into town, speed limits, stop and go traffic, idling, parking lots. So just how much time was actually boosting, pouring on the coal, fat to the mat, heel to the steel, stretch it's legs?? Not a lot because almost all the time there's no room, opportunity or need to. Now if you have a low compression engine it will be under powered below 3K right where you need it in traffic to get your car moving from a stop and up to speed. A normal compression or even higher will have more zip and be more fun to drive in traffic. Now if purpose built for hill climbing, track or drag racing where the revs are always above 3K a low compression high boost engine might make more sense. Quote Link to comment

I don't know what the point of this debate is anymore, honestly. I would daily my 510 16 miles to work, most of the drive on the freeway. I'm pretty sure I would be "boosting" most of the commute. I never said I wanted a low compression motor, go back to the PM's and read what compression would give out from L20b rods and 32mm Flatop SR pistons. Just going by your advice. You said 8.55 2 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Found it. Also in same sentence I said it 'needs to be confirmed'. I may have read hurriedly and copied a wrong number. L20B bored to 86mm with SR flattops and L20B 145.9mm rods and open chamber head is around 6.36 The discussion was that higher compression engines are more responsive than a low compression engine when not boosting. Even at low boost a low compression engine has a long way to go to equal a higher compression engine. If you are cruising on the highway even above 3k you may not be boosting and not need to. If you have a boost gauge see what it reads. I will give you that a low compression engine like the one above has basically a combustion chamber that is almost 40cc larger than the same engine but with the 152.5mm rods and over 10 compression. At say, 14 PSI boost and 4 cylinders x 40cc = 160cc... you are cramming a lot more fuel and air in there..... (when up an boosting) Quote Link to comment
wayno
Do you even have a boost gauge or a tach, as you have published some comments that make it sound like you are guessing, like when you mentioned being limited to under 7psi yet you didn't know what rpm the turbo was spinning up, it sounded like you were guessing. I have a boost gauge, an EGT gauge, and a tach and I know exactly what is going on with my engine, I also watch my water temp gauge like a hawk, both my trucks have seen 20psi in the last year, the better the engine ran the higher the boost, it got to the point where I had to start putting in valves to control the waste gate as my boost was creeping up higher and higher. If you are guessing...................................... Quote Link to comment
That4doorKiD
Sold my pistons. I have to sacrifice this project for an opportunity I'm giving myself. Hopefully I can return to my car during Christmas the soonest or maybe next year :( I miss my car so much already just hearing the low timing backfire all the left over gas :((( , my subwoofers, and how awesome it is! Damn this thing was my life. I literally feel incomplete. I think about my 510 every single day and dream about my plans that are ahead. Tribute to my 510! 2 Quote Link to comment

Kid, find a stock motor and just drop it in and make it driveable before you quit on it. Big dreams will come with time and money, find a $300 L-motor and drop it in as fast as you can before it sits. 2 Quote Link to comment

nl320what
I like to make things that work well with used parts like these Franken Datsun motors. You wont need to spend alot of cash to have a fun motor. I have many other combos for L motors too, but I really enjoyed my L16 the best. 2 Quote Link to comment
That4doorKiD
So here comes the return, I'm focused on school and getting my girl back. Going for a wire tuck and freshened engine bay harness. Plugs were bought from vintage connections, and wire is all 14-16 gauge. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1ux6yVK8iWUkx8MzxJk0TSxvr_kG5gjKL https://drive.google.com/open?id=1WITj3eVhHKMPk25KChPphRonPeNjxbwi Since I had to pull the drivetrain, it was finally time to start the clean looking bay I wanted. Everything's done by me at home, not perfect, but it's all going to be perfectly imperfect. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1GWmRaPhe7OV3fEF6yES05aTdbOO4DCSM https://drive.google.com/file/d/1K4h-Z9m7PDEJycVshhNj8ouL0-DN1Xgt/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/open?id=1eps1IpgFI3OCxNQIN9Z2oMvihe76Ose_ So the battery tray delete was a little messy. Before I knew it the seam and drilled spots welds were 2 inches wide. I should've welded up the seam with a copper background. I cut out a big patch I could make just patch up with a plate. Bent, hammered, and more hammering using the tree branch contour. https://drive.google.com/open?id=132GKNYVcj031dE_u3Kxcgq1Vu0KtTw7D https://drive.google.com/open?id=1HsiyCKZhQ8gK3CYCPY1z7vyOxj4CzXEo https://drive.google.com/open?id=1wGjtxvtZ3GZXqVQG9wWeFcSgcEB0o0Ob https://drive.google.com/open?id=1bC7dPMcUzQXkNNkFaAFE9IUcWU-4A8ot 2 Quote Link to comment

Dolomite
Ok, I know I’ve busted your balls more than once, but I’m going to give you two good pieces of advice. First and foremost, ditch the bondo brand filler, it’s absolute shit. You can get evercoat z grip for about $35/gal on ebay if you shop around. Also, when applying filler, push fairly hard so it’s almost even with the finished height you’re looking for. If you use z grip, you can start shaping it when it’s the texture of velveeta cheese product, it makes life way easier. Second, if you haven’t won the heart of your desire back yet, don’t try too hard. If you try to hard, women think they own you and you’re their bitch. Quiet confidence is the key. Trust that, I won over my girlfriend that way about sixteen years ago, we just celebrated our 13th wedding anniversary. Good luck on the build and keep oics coming. 2 Quote Link to comment

That4doorKiD
So many holes. So many sanding. So many pain. But, so many pretty now. My first coat I didnt know what I was doing. So many runs everywhere and orange peel for days. A LITTLE discouraging, JUST A LITTLE. But, yall know me, I learn from the mistakes and experiences. So I ended up sanding like 3 coats of sealer over and over. Quote Link to comment
