Replaced headgasket on my Z24; lost time\tension

Pull the coil wire off..... got spark when cranking???

 

Is distributor plugged in?

Bolted down snug so it's well grounded?

Definitely have spark to the dist.

 

Is bolted down well, all wires connected.

 

I've checked the oil spindle a bunch,

Perhaps the spindle is one notch too far ccw?

If you are on TDC compression stroke on #1 cylinder then...... this is perfect

The rotor under the cap has two contacts for two sets of wires from two coils. The intake rotor should be pointing to about 9 o'clock and the exhaust rotor about 4 o'clock. On the cap above the rotor is Intake 1 at 9 o'clock and Exhaust 1 at 4 o'clock.

 

 

Finger on Intake one. Exhaust one is three positions counter clockwise.

How do I determine if the TDC is exhaust or compression stroke? It is possible I set that on the exhaust stroke...

Take the valve cover off. Compression stroke on number one will see the cam lobes like this... front one (exhaust) at about 8 o'clock and the intake behind it at about 4 o'clock as viewed from the front. Both valves will be closed.

Okay, I was setting the oil spindle to the exhaust stroke. Flipped it around and bingo.

is that the beginning or the top of the lobe?

theres a weird whine after i got it started up, first i thought it was an uneven belt, or the fan, but its pretty loud. I'm thinking the cam is off by a tooth or three.

If theres a problem to be found in this project; ill find it.
