I had a clamp on [to the drip rails] with white rubber susction cups to the roof to protect the sheet metal and serve as a last ditch "Hail Mary" if the straps to the rail clamps failed.  Over the years it dissappeared but still might be in some dank corner of my garage.  But, I think you are seeking [and deserve] a factory looking installed unit, right?  With or without longitudinal chromed rails on the roof and raised side rails to tie down the luggage.  Usually seen on wagons, but shorter sedan versions were once offered by aftermarket providers.  Good luck!

I would think if you Sourced a VW squareback rack you could make it work with a little modification....
