Need a few reference photos: bucket seats, shelf, carpet

Hi,

I need a few photos so that I can give them to the upholsterer. I want the seats and carpet to look as original as possible. I'm also looking for photos for "the shelf" that's on the passenger side. May need to fabricate that. That was one feature that is missing on the car and that I liked when I had my PL411 oh so many years ago.

Any reference photos would be helpful. Measurements for the shelf would be great. Even better if someone could sell me a spare. If so, please PM me.

Thanks,

DD

Anyone know of a carpet kit that fits the 411 well? Thanks for any info.

JCWhitney sells a good carpet kit.  It has a separated transmission tunnel rug [3 piece, not one piece] and is cut for the manual transmission.  I bought the loop pile one and it looks like the original when installed.  They also sell fastener kits that add steel snap rings to the carpet back that match the factory snap fasteners on the steel floor.  You have to be a bit careful to align the center front piece to  the passenger and driver sides but it  does come out well.  The back rug fits very well also and is one piece.

By the way, it does seem as if the seats in the 411 are very different from the ones in the Roadster. True?

I believe so, but there are so many different versions of the 310/311 roadster series that it is difficult to make a definitive statement.  "310.org" just might have your true answer.  The "crease" in the front of the 411 bucket seats is a "loop" in the seat fabric that is solidly stitched at the seat level.  The "basement loop" left is then cross fitted with a stiff wire cross "brace" that has loops on each end.  These loops are then attached to the seat springs with wire loops thus providing the indented potion of the front bucket seats that you see in the above provided photo!  The original bucket seats had vinyl fabric sewn around a cord insert to form the separating beads between the vinyl fabric panels.  It's a bitch to sew up the almost genuine version!  Use vinly whip lacing stock instead, I did.  I still don't know just what to do with my failed so called genuine replica resewn leftovers.  Some I converted to slings for my replica Japanese pellet UZI.

Shelf

Thanks much for the excellent reference. Looks like it would be fun (if not a wee bit complicated) to make, but I don't have any metal working knowledge or an area in my apartment where I could make it. Bummer. I wonder if a better one could be crafted more easily given the existing mounts?

If anyone knows of an extra "shelf," please let me know. I feel it is one of the iconic pieces of the car and I'd love to have one. As far as I know, this is a "Bluebird only" interior piece.

Cheers!

Cool, reminds me of my old Bluebird PL411. White (cream) w/ red interior. My seats were all one color red, though. I very much appreciate the reference photos and the time you took to post them.

Looks a lot like the 521 pick up package shelf!  If you can find the carcase of one you can rebuild the "cardboard" shelf portion.  My son used my 411 for informal races and his navigator used the package shelf as a foot rest.  You can guess the result!  I tore up some single layer cardboard and used it to replace the missing sections of the original shelf.  With the following mods!  I cleaned what was left of the original shelf.  I then fitted in the shreds of cardboard to approximate the original layer and glued them in with Elmer's Glue.  I bought a Fiberglas kit for clading canoes or row boats at the local hardware store.  This kit has a fiberglass serge weave cloth [important for strength and to replicate the original shelf appearance] and the required epoxy mix.  Paint the remnant original and torn cardboard top surface with non catalyzed resin.  Mix the resin and catylist [about half the kit volume], saturate a swatch of the [precut and sized] cloth and apply to the top of the remnant and surrogate cardboard fillers.  when this cures it will look just like the factory top surface package shelf.  Now to finish the job!  Saturate the bottom surface with un-catalyzed resin again and let it soak in.  Go to sleep.  Next day, mix the resin and catalyst and apply as a thick coat to the bottom surface.  The thick coat will cure and the heat will cure the saturated resin previously applied providing necessary strength to the patched and repaired shelf.
