zeke
I've got a '77 620 4x4 that's giving me no spark. The truck was not running when i got it. This is what I'm working with. The two red wires where connected when I got the truck. I've looked through tons of diagrams, but haven't found a setup like this with the dual resistor. Fuses are all good. Ignition switch works. datzenmike
That is a California set up with the dual ballast resistor. In addition it shouldn't be points, but remote igniter distributor. So it's either a California truck or someone put the wrong ballast resister in and tried wiring it up by adding wires and connectors so any kind of diagnosis is a waste of time. You're going to have to slit those black plastic sleeves off so we can see the true wires and their color codes. Have a look under the dash between the glove box and the upper kick pad... above the top passenger side door hinge. Is there a box like this???... Better yet get the distributor number off the side of the case. It starts 22100-????? Lets find out what you have first. Quote Link to comment

Hook the red wires together, you do not any contact back to the (-) NEG side of the coil Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The California distributor used a red wire but it went to the transistor ignition box not the coil. The points distributor uses a Black/Blue stripe wire from the coil negative to the points. Quote Link to comment
Eagle_Adam
I should have the control box of you need one Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
But you will need the remote igniter distributor to make it work. This is a points distributor... probably easier to get the correct ballast for it and wire it up. 2 Quote Link to comment
zeke
The model is 22100 n6005 Quote Link to comment
zeke
Under the black tape is as follows Black/white wire splits into black/white and brown wires to the balast. Black/blue wire splits into the white and yellow wires to the ballast and a white/black wire to the coil+ The blue wire is straight through to the coil- Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
N6005 was a very generic points distributor for any year L20B so it doesn't tell us anything. The California transistor unit is not like the one I posted above. It's likely in the engine bay, about the size of a pack of cigarettes, cast aluminum and covered with fins. Black/white wire splits into black/white and brown wires to the balast.Black/blue wire splits into the white and yellow wires to the ballast and a white/black wire to the coil+The blue wire is straight through to the coil- Everything you have, points to that ballast being wrong for the distributor that you have. Your ballast should have only two terminals. Now possibly it can be wired up, but I have no faith that it will be right and may over heat the points or the coil or both. ONE... Can you post pictures of the passenger side inner fender?? TWO... Can you get the correct ballast resistor for the truck? Then wiring will be a snap to do. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
What's that thing just behind the red wires?? Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
That's the EGR light counter. Which indicates it's not a California truck, they didn't have an EGR light. Quote Link to comment
zeke
I think its the detector drive counter. Quote Link to comment
zeke
What connects to the points in the distributor? 1 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
I would get a stock 1.6 or 1.6 ohm ballast resisitor find the 12volt on wire find the 12volt START only wire take the 12volt ON wire(usual Blk wht wire color) and rout to the ballast resisitor Key is in ON position . other side ballaswires t goes to + side coil. take the 12volt Start wire and take goes to the +side coil so 2 wires will be hooked up at the +side ballast if there isn't already 2 wires in harness hooked up that way wire from points go to the - side coil. should have spark then if the points are working if this is a 77 I assume the vehicle has a hot start wire(bypass wire). this gives the coil battery voltage as it loads down during the start process. then key snaps back to ON the 12volts will go from the fuse box to thru the ballast then to ground as the points closes and charges up the coil. when points open the coil Magnectic fiels collapses going thru the 2nd windings and to the spark plugs. 2 Quote Link to comment
Doctor510
What connects to the points in the distributor? On your dist, the red (orig black) should go the the NEG (-) side of the coil this will signal the points to fire. Quote Link to comment

This should do it. Neg side of coil goes to the points and to ground. Quote Link to comment
