Eomund Posted March 13, 2016 Report Share Posted March 13, 2016 So I was driving home last night and started to hear a god awful squealing from under my dash and my speedo started bouncing around like crazy. Immediately pulled over and popped the speedo cable out to prevent any possible further damage. I've determined it's the cluster unfortunately. Has anyone dealt with this. Is it repairable, or should I start shopping for a replacement? Thanks! 1 Quote Link to comment
MikeRL411 Posted March 14, 2016 Report Share Posted March 14, 2016 In all honesty I would first have the speedometer cable to the transmission lubricated. Graphite "oil dag" is better than "water dag" and both are better than straight powdered graphite. A very far out alternative is that the solder joint between the speedometer drive shaft and the copper drag cupstarted to crack and the cup is rubbing the housing. The crack would induce a wobbling needle as the magnetic coupling varied with the angle between the cup and the rotating magnet at the end of the drive shaft. 4perrev Posted March 15, 2016 Report Share Posted March 15, 2016 Had it on an Acura back in the day.pulled the cable and greased the heck out of it. Worked for a minute and came back. Took the speedo out and the two plates inside were bent. Tried to straighten, but didn't work. Went to a junkyard and pulled an RX-7 and it worked great. He does all the law enforcement vehicles here so a civilian speedometer is a time taking repair. It usually costs about $175. I would suggest sourcing another speedometer if it is not the cable. Ima gonna try and pull it tomorrow, just to see what I'm dealing with. I lived behind the wheel mechanism, and fed grease into where the cable goes into. Not sure how permanent the fix will be, I'll let you all know.
