Byron-521
Does the 71 Datsun 521 have rear differential, does it have axle seals? I saw fluid moisture by the passenger & driver side back plate brake assembly. Any info would help thanks. 1 Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
Yes it has a rear diff, it's rear wheel drive. Yes, it has axle seals. They could be leaking, but it's more often brake cylinders leaking. 2 Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
Do you often need to top up the brake fluid???? If you just bought it, is the master cylinder low on fluid?? 1 Quote Link to comment
Byron-521
Thanks for the feed back. & I just bought the 521 last Sunday & by the looks of it previous owner didn't maintain the truck. I just cleaned the bottom of the engine bay & tried cleaning it, tomorrow a friend of mine is gonna help me check out the brakes & replace them with the wheel cylinders. When I went to the local auto part store they didn't sell a axle seal? & I noticed old oil stuck around the inside wheel area. 1 Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
There is a seal to keep the gear oil in the housing, nissan part: 38212-73000 And a seal to keep bearing grease in the hub, nissan part: 40227-32201 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
It's probably brake fluid. 1 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
if oil on brakes and you positive its gear oil you. jusr replace this first as the 2nd seal listed by matt the grease seal you have to pull the bearing off. You don't need to do this just buy the 1st seal There is a seal to keep the gear oil in the housing, nissan part: 38212-73000 I had no proplem finding this seal from O rileys or what ever but buy the nissanone as its a double lip type. SKF has a single lip and they will leak sooner . key is not to rest the axle on the seal while installing it to oblong it 1 Quote Link to comment
