i have a 1983 and a half 720 extended cab so its technically Nissan. i am building this truck to basically out do my father's 88 Mercedes 300ce. so far i have a new motor that should do the trick horsepower wise, but im having issues finding information about the rear end, i dont know what differential is in it, i am looking to build a posi for it. as for other information on my truck; as i said it is an 83.5 Nissan 720 extended cab currently has the z24 motor in it but im going to swap the motor for a newer ka24de-t i haven't decided on a new transmission but it currently has the stock 5 speed (that i also have very little information on), and just a plain open differential. any information on the rear end and the transmission would be greatly appreciated. thank you

You will definitely need a DET engine to get near the Mercedes.

The differential size and ratio is stamped into the engine tag under the pass side hood hinge on the inner fender. In the lower right corner it will say something like HF39 H is the type of axle, F is the diameter... 190mm, 38 would be the ratio 3.889.... a 37 would be 3.70 and so on. Almost all 620 trucks wer 4.375 ratio. There are no H-190 LSDs available. Welding them is foolish in a state with so much rain. You won't need it.

The Transmission type is stamped just to the left of the axle info... If a standard it will be FS5W71B. If getting a KA engine this one will bolt up, but the KA transmission (FS5W71C) is much stronger but also longer and will need the drive shaft shortened.

Are you doing the swap or having it done? Have you ever swapped an engine?

Mike Just what is the length of the KA 5 speeds and the KA automatics?

Those will work. But they usually cause the diff to start wearing out the diff housing and eventually lead to failure.

Otherwise, supposedly an lsd was offered but if so its rare as hens teeth.

Honestly, your better bet is swapping rear ends. If you want to stay Nissan, get a rear axle out of a v6 d21. H233 axle nearly all are lsd and only about 3 inches wider than your h190. Factory disc brake swaps are available for them as well. Almost all are either 4.3 or 4.6 gears.

so would there be anyway to get an lsd for my current rear end?

anyone ever seen this before?

The traction concepts uses extreme spring force to crush the spider gears outward against the differential case forcing the steel thrust washer to act like a clutch. This is not what they were designed for. Real LSDs use multiple clutches on each side.

Search the junk yards for a '88 through 2wd 4 cylinder '92 D-21 Hardbodys. It was an option so rare to find one. don't hold your breath waiting for one. Only easy way to tell is to look for an orange LSD sticker on the rear of the third member. Probably covered in oil so take a rag.

Gears ratios 3.545, 3.889, 3.700.

Here's what I would do. Find a 4.375 or 4.625 differential and weld it up. This is called a Lincoln locker. Swap in and race dad then remove and put the older safer diff back in.
