oil leak from dipstick area

Hello all. I just purchased a 1985 720 z24 kc and I noticed when I went to check the oil that there was a leak coming from the dipstick area. I went to pull the dipstick out and not only did the dipstick come out, but the whole sleeve that you feed the dipstick through, also came out. It seems there should be a gasket or something that makes this seal properly??? It definitely leak a fair amount here and do not want to drive it until I fix this issue. I thought some of you might be able to lend some wisdom. Thanks!

Kris

Also, how do you post pictures on here? I think it would be helpful to include some images.. Thx

Welp, thanks Flatimus! I got this far, but it sends you to the link instead of showing up on my post. This is better than nothing and I will figure it sooner than later.

In the images, you can see the oil leak from the point of the dipstick cylinder and the following pics of the dipstick removed along with cylinder housing, a funny rubber washer (that I feel is not supposed to be there and also, both the oil cylinder housing and dipstick removed.

Thanks y'all.

Kris

I'm not familiar with the Z24. There should be an O-ring at the bottom that keeps it in the hole in the block.

I'm wondering if that square piece is broken and supposed to bolt to the block.

May need to find a dipstick tube from a junkyard.

4x4s and 2WDs had different pans.

No oring that I believe.. someone must have replaced it already an worked the hole a little bit bigger, be it with a new tube or a drill..

The only thing really you can do is either try a different tube, or close the hole and make a new one. Or some good ol jb weld.. when I built my Lz I made my hole just a little to biG and your able to spin the tube. I think I kinda flared the bottom and then shoved the tube in the block. Never I had a problem..

It just presses into the block that flat piece spot welded on is like the hilt on a sword. It only allow the dip stick tube to go that far into the block.

I would carb spray the hole and the tube and goop a little sealer on it and press back in. Test fit... if a little loose try crushing it slightly oval so it's tighter.
