Tolkmod
Hey Guys, been wracking my brain on this one... So i found out that I had a short inside my headlight switch, so I ordered a new one. Plugged it in and awesome, everything works fantastic. Oops... not everything. Dang blinkers wont work now. My flashers turn on fine so i know it's not a grounding or power issue, and I checked all the parking lights as well, everything is on and working great. Turn signal... nope, nothing. Even removed the whole device from my steering column and cleaned it up thinking it might just be a bad connection. Nothing.... they just don't want to work. Weird thing was that they were working fine when there was a short in the headlight switch. Anyone have a clue where i can start diagnosing this? I've checked my service manual and it really doesn't give me anything other than the layout of the wiring, that's nice, but the wiring all looks fine, even ran a voltmeter across it, everything's getting power just no lights. I found the hazard relay, but it didn't say (or i couldn't find it that is) if there was a separate blinker relay or anything that could have shorted out, and I have my dash removed so if anyone knows if there is a relay for it I'd love to hear about it. Thanks in advance! Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Just thought of something... Try turning the 4 way switch on off on off on off a bunch of times to polish the contacts. Leave the key on with the turn signal switch to either L or R side. Slowly turn the 4 way flasher switch to the off position. Do the turn signals come on? Quote Link to comment
Tolkmod
Hum... okay I'll give it a try. Thanks D-mike. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Since the turn signal and the 4 way would conflict if both on at the same time the 4 way switch also has the turn signal wires running through it as well. When the four way is on, the turn signals are disconnected. When the 4 way is turned off again, the turn signals (should) be re-connected. If the switch is loose or corroded from not being used much the turns are simply not connected. The 720 truck is well known for this. The 4 way switch when moved to the off position goes too far and right past the connection. The fix is to move the 4 way switch just slightly towards the On position to make contact. It's a shot in the dark but an easy fix if it's right.. Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
I haven't owned enough older datsuns to deal with it in them, but Mike is right about 720s. I've had this same problem on 3 different 720s. Quote Link to comment
Tolkmod
Tried it, and thanks for the explanation on the way it works. No go though... I'll have to take it off in the morning and check the connections in better light. At least I have a power flow I can trace now. Quote Link to comment
KELMO
The catalog does list 2 separate flashers. 25520-89976 Flasher 25520-89990 Flasher Hazard (although after this listing it does say Europe) In the illustration, the hazard appears to mount to the left of the steering wheel and is mounted horizontal. The regular flasher mounts to the right of the steering wheel and is vertical. I said all that to say this; I have not had a B210, but have had several 1200's and they have had 2 flashers and the cars have some similarities.......B110 evolved into B210. Hope there is some help in there. Quote Link to comment
Tolkmod
yeah doesn't look like there's a separate flasher unit on mine from what I can tell anyways. I cleaned up the contacts on the Hazard switch, they were just slightly dirty but nothing to keep contact from being made. no change in the blinkers though... Next i'm going to use a small jumper wire and see if that's the trick... and i'm also gonna trace the full wire run just in case something's hiding under a pile of crap that i don't see. I'm kinda at a loss right now as to what it might be. I've checked all the fuse connections like ten times, and my flashers still work great. Old cars... love and hate'm at the same time Quote Link to comment
Tolkmod
So after tearing apart the whole dash and tracing every wire I found that I actually do have a turn signal switch unit. The thing was zip tied to a long line of power cords on the other side of the dash behind where the glove box would be. I cleaned the contacts and BAM!!!!! Working blinkers. :w00t:  :w00t: Here's a picture of the Hazard switch unit as well so you can see the difference. I found a cheap and rather nice NOS turn signal unit so i bought it anyways. Never hurts to get some new stuff in there, especially seeing how bad my old one was. Here's the original. And my pretty new one. Works great  So, yeah that be the end of the "no blinkers" drama... ON TO THE NEXT CRISIS!!! -Tolk Quote Link to comment
KELMO
That is kinda jacked up that they were so far apart, but glad you got it fixed. Quote Link to comment
Tolkmod
That is kinda jacked up that they were so far apart, but glad you got it fixed. yeah was a pain to find but once I actually spent the time to trace the wires it was an easy fix. at least anyone having issues with them in the future can refer back to this and know for sure that there is a switch unit for the blinkers AND the hazards.
