1981 720 4x4 hideous paint job

Hey all, new member, first post.  Bought  a  1981 720 4x4 yesterday.

I want to upload pictures, and have a few questions. Where is the image upload function? I can't seem to find it.

Here is the link to the craigslist ad. Isn't she pretty?

It can't hold on to 5th gear.  And a bearing is dead which allows the shifter to float around, so its a game of find the gear.

I don't know a hell of a lot about mechanics but I have friends and were going to keep this tetanus pile alive.

Any comments appreciated. Will follow up with more specific information after I get a more concise diagnostic.

It's.. different.

To post your computer pictures you will need to download them to a picture hosting site like Photobucket. Then transfer them here. Look just below the Happy Face icon, top center of posting page. See the green square? Click it and post the Photobucket URL there.

Can't find 5th at all, hard to find or won't stay in 5th? If you can't find 5th you may have a 4 speed. The 720 had 4 speeds in '81 still. If jumping out of gear that's a transmission problem. If shifter is sloppy and all over the place that's an easy fix. It just needs shifter bushings. I think Nissan still has them.

2 bushings........... 32855-H1010 if you have the Z22 engine.

cup....................... 32861-N4200

It is a 5 speed. I can get it into fifth but have to hold it there. Otherwise it forces itself out of gear into neutral . It also leaks gear oil and transmission fluid I believe. So I anticipate having the whole tranny rebuilt / replaced.  Going to dig deeper tomorrow just wanted to know if this is common or what, will update with further information. Thanks

The 71B has been known to back off the main shaft lock nut. The 720 has two different lengths and yours is likely the one below. Start on the right and follow in to the left. The plastic worm gear for the speedometer drive... then a bearing for the tail shaft case.... then a large lock nut pretty close to the gear (5th) just to it's left.

This is the shorter transmission and other than being shorter the worm gear for the speedometer is metal and clamped between the lock nut and 5th gear. Yours is likely the top photo but this one shows the nut better. What happens is the nut can loosen and back off slightly and 5th 'goes away'. As far as I know tightening the mainshaft lock nut should bring it back. 100 to 120 ft pounds are needed to properly tighten the nut.

Be sure to stake the nut so it won't turn.

As for the oil leak, if the very back and driveshaft are oily, replace the $5 seal where the driveshaft spline goes in.

Thanks everyone. All information is much appreciated. Look forward to getting into it.

For the record I think the paint job is hilarious and fitting. Definitely leaving it, for now. End goal is apocalyptic war machine.

I hear these trucks basically came out of Tennesee with rust. Any backyard Macgyver band aid solutions?  Not caring much is where Im at currently. Its all body, but pervasive.

I will likely patch it all up eventually. Its coming out to Burning Man where I work for a couple months and will likely end up with shit welded to it, armor, spikes, roof hatch, cattle catcher?  etc.

We'll see. Hopefully.

Sounds like you work for DPW.
