Anonymous Waffle
Anyone ever have fuel delivery issues when you get less than a quarter tank of fuel? Roughly 3 gallons. Had it starve the carbs once, and wasn't a clog, after getting more fuel, it started up. Do different years have different fuel tank designs? I'm running a l16, stock fuel pump, su carbs. Draker
How are you sure it's not a clog? I had all sorts of issues.. but I had all sorts of shit loose in the tank, even after cleaning it 2 or 3 times. Quote Link to comment

banzai510(hainz)
have you ran it with just a down draft weber or stock carb set up? otherwise I dont trust SUs that were in a box called (spare Junk) 2 Quote Link to comment
Anonymous Waffle
Rear carb's bowl was empty, needle got stuck, but after we got it unstuck, no fuel pumped in. We disconnected the main line and cranked, and only a small amount pumping. (I'm running 2 fuel filters, and we replaced the entire hard line with fuel hose to bypass the hard line) We checked and disconnected the fuel filters, they weren't clogged, but it wasnt much fuel in them, as if the tank was empty. Anonymous Waffle
Yeah I ran with a stock shitachi for a year. First meeting with the SU's, I had a quarter tank, it died of starvation, we got a 2 gallon fuel canister from a a fellow club member and filled it up, and it pumped fuel right up and drove. New needles, seats, gaskets, hoses. Only problem is that it's a 1800 610 carbs that are on a l16, ztherapy doesnt have flat top needles and seats since they're different than round top so it runs a little rich for the 1600... 1 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
1600/1800 or a L20 isnt going to matter much. I dont care what other people say on this. if it ran good with the down draft then you pretty much have your anwser. i run 2 filters on my 521 so that isnt the proplem either. 1 Quote Link to comment
KoHeartsGPA
I'm with hainz, I too run 2 filters, the second one that is by the Carb is metal and glass so I can see the gas flow, I recommend that style highly so it's easier to troubleshoot any type of starvation problem....I got the metal/glass filter at NAPA...paid like $10 or so.....I'm thinking your SUs aren't adjusted properly if the bowl is empty. Draker
Install a glass filter by the tank, if it's empty there... then the pickup tube is blocked. Quote Link to comment
INDY510
whenever I ran out of gas in my 510, it always needed 2 or 3 gallons to start again .. and 1/4 on the 69 gauge was basically empty 1 Quote Link to comment

Its just the needle, its adjusted right, the new needle sometimes gets stuck, but its been running fine lately. Quote Link to comment

Anonymous Waffle
So I've heard of the 2-3 gallons in the tank not being picked up issue before, could this be a fuel pump issue? I've got the stock fuel pump. Quote Link to comment

banzai510(hainz)
dude point the output hose of the uel pump in safe direction. If shoots out gobs of gas then its fine. a 510 can run for a few minutes at idle with no gas going to the carb so this shows you it dont need much. 1 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
not tight meaning if not clamped good the pump sucks air not the gas. Why you have a filter by the tank is beyound me. 510 tanks dont rust out as its inside. so most times its clean the trucks have the issue. so every place you have a breck and a hose issuse it alwasy needs to be cked. I like my filters up front in engine bay. 1 Quote Link to comment
Anonymous Waffle
It's been fine ever since that day. The issue was that no fuel was pumping to the carbs UNTIL we filled the tank. You'd think it's another plugged line, but we checked all lines. Only thing we never looked close at was the pickup tube. We've checked the output and it pumps fine, that's one of the things we check whenever I have fuel delivery problems. Quote Link to comment
Draker
My tank was really rusty. It sat for 25 years though, inside a barn. Quote Link to comment

We need to do another tank flush.. 2 makes it easier to see where a clog could be, if at the back or front of the car, making quick maintenance easier. Quote Link to comment

Draker
If the pickup tube broke off in the tank... you'd probably have this issue. I have no idea how that would happen. It's a steal tube welded to the thank with no moving parts inside. Pull the output tube, see if gas is shooting out. Quote Link to comment
Anonymous Waffle
Also: this occurred about 3 weeks ago. Its running perfectly fine, especially when I drove on the delta.. Right now I'm at school, and I'm at above a quarter tank (indicated). I will let you all know if this problem occurs again. My pickup tube might be rusted out.. But I don't think it would be broken off. Quote Link to comment
Anonymous Waffle
All the designs are the same except the fuel neck and there's an external evaporation tank on 69' later models. My fuel gauge doesn't read unless i put more than 2 gallons than it gets to "E" That just might be your fuel sender or gauge.. So the bafel design should be the same? Quote Link to comment
