power steering box questions

Recommended Posts

Hey all, starting a big project with my 210 and was wondering about the possibilities of bolting up a power steering box from another car like a z. splines, bolt pattern etc. looking at pictures of them and comparing to my stock manual steering box they look very similar just wondering if anyone has ever done this or if someone could take a couple measurements or chime in.

Thanks in advance

The 210 steering box is similar to most PL510/610/710/HL510s and is tight against the firewall. The 280zx and the S110sx (slightly larger cars) have a power steering option powered by an engine driven hydraulic pump. The thing is, is that the power assist is built into the back of the box where the steering column enters it. I'm looking into doing a power assist steering in my 710 (using an S110 box) and when installed, the back of the box  extends back into the cabin through the floor. I think it will work if the column is shortened and the opening in the floor covered somehow. Confounding the problem is the collapsible nature of the column. Then a pump must be belt driven off the front engine pulley.

A 210 is quite light and doesn't need PS that bad. Go to the gym.

Lol yea I get that, just with the swap Im doing, heavier motor/alot of power, power steering would be nice insurance to keep it out of the ditch. Can do without power steering but that doesnt mean it wouldnt be easier to correct/countersteer with power steering. thanks for the info though, sounds like the power steering boxes

are quite a bit longer and wouldnt fit without some cutting/welding/fabrication.

Just thought I'd chip in on this with a suggestion from this side of the pond. Here, retrofit power steering has become pretty popular, particularly in rallying and the standard route is now Electronic Power Steering (EPS). The advantage being you can make it variable, fixed rate or even switch it off as required. Typical applications here are Mk1 and Mk2 Ford Escort which are catered for by numerous companies. Here's a typical universal set-up...

Most of the DIY conversions use parts from the Vauxhall or Opel Corsa here. I don't think GM sold a version of that in North America but they are bound to have used the equipment on another model there I would think.

The added bonus of EPS is there's no need to accomodate  the PAS pump and pipework, nor the much larger PAS steering box. It takes a bit of fabrication to install but it's often a better option especially for big engine swaps into small cars!
