Jesus Rawlings is about as in the middle of nowhere, as any place this side of Mars.

If you don't see resistor next to coil on that shelf next to coil,, (or hooked directly to coil) ,, maybe that caused your problem ,, as it might have burnt out your points..   You can field test your coil by running a wire directly from positive side of battery (with a jumper wire) to the + on the coil and tap it ,, it should fire at the distributor end if the wire is pulled out of the distributor cap and laid next to an engine ground ..  OR hold positive to + and tap a separate ground wire to - side of coil.................. DON'T leave straight B+ hooked to coil very long though as it will heat up

Always carry at least one set of NEW points in your car ,,,,

The service manual i have in front of me says point gap is    0.020 in.

I looked up the point set on rockauto and the points for your car should also be compatible wth these other vehicles ,, if that helps the counter guy find them easier.

VERY far out, but it happened to me.  The "extra flex" or "Litz" wire from the points plate to the feedthru to ground can [rarely] break, thus disabling the ground return from the points.  Said wire unobtainable, BUT is included in early VW liquid engine point system renew point sets.  Sorry, can't remember the exact series, but go to good auto parts store and look for a point set for VWs that has a wire from the point plate to the bypass capacitor.

If unobtainable, do what I did.  Take a point bypass capacitor, cut the ground cable, swedge or solder on an open spade connector, fold the wire in half to provide expansion capability and wire it in place of the open plate to ground wire.   My RL411 still has the folded substitute ground wire after 25 years!  Just be careful of how you route the wire, it should not interfere with normal to-and-fro plate travel,

As an emergency "fix", wiggle the open wire until you believe you can felt a "connect".  Hit the starter then stop! You have just welded enough individual wire strands to get the engine started and drive to the nearest auto parts store and start searching for the VW point set. I can personally vouch for this quick avoidance of a tow truck!

Is the choke on??? Cold start it should be closed. Just take top off the air filter and look. Once warm it should be off or full open.

Closed. On cold engine tap accelerator once to set the choke to ON...

Open when engine fully warmed up 10-20 min depending on weather.

The above is for an electric choke. Yours may be a pull knob on the dash. May have choke or a C on it. Pull out fully and check the choke is ON.

You ever wonder why anyone would ever,  in the history of the world,, end up living in Wyoming ,,,,,,,, look behind their barns,  there is probably a broke down Datsun back there..

Give me the address of the guy you bought it from, and i will drive over there tonight with a map with Wyoming circled and kick him dead in the nuts for you.

If that old J13 got you all the way out there,, it sounds like it has lots of life left in her.. When you get it home just post in your build thread and there will be many people MORE than willing to give you help in getting her up and running again.

Happy thoughts in the new year .

Because it's is realy "Gods country!"  Open range. Antelopre and Elk!  Who need more!  Plus we got the constitual minimal votein the US Congress than any other US State than the Union!  Thank for the comprise that guarantise every statle  one house in the US House of Representatives!  No longer a Wyomng a resident, but enjoyed the privelegiges of the unique state while I was a voter!  BTY, Wyoming was the first state to allow Women to vote!  That's why it's called the "Equallity State", but I had to wait until my marriage to my Japanese wife was "Legal"despite the Equality State motto!  My wife was uniformily asked "What tribe are you from?" in Amerind tribal meetings that we attended in Wyoming or Montana BTW!  Gues we didn't look like Hutterites!
