flatcat19
I hope this doesn't turn into another one of THOSE threads. Listen to what Mike is telling you. This should be a 10 minute diagnosis. 1 Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
It's more than miss timed if not turning. The woodruf key locks the gear to the crank, so that's not possible to be miss timed. The distributor/oil pump drive spindle has a pressed on gear that engages the crank worm gear. I think there are 40 teeth so 40 possible positions... BUT if at TDC the top of the spindle should look like this when installed correctly... Quote Link to comment

logiccreations
fixed the distributor but i still dont have any spark. i have power to the coil and a good ground but no spark Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Why wasn't the distributor turning? Take cap and rotor off and turn engine over while watching the points. The points should open and close. At full open the gap should be about 0.020" Quote Link to comment
logiccreations
the gap is fine and i just loosed the oil pump and wiggled it till it started spinning. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The spindle can't 'not spin'. The spindle turns the distributor and the oil pump. The worm gear on the crank turns the spindle. There's no way to not turn unless the worm gear spins on the crank. Look at the points, do they open and close??? Quote Link to comment
Draker
fixed the distributor but i still dont have any spark. i have power to the coil and a good ground but no spark No spark at the coil? Or no spark at the plugs? Quote Link to comment
logiccreations
At coil Quote Link to comment
Draker
Coil could be toast. Do you have 12v at the coil wire? Get a meter and test for 12v. Then measure the coils resistance and compare so spec. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
OK 12 volts at the positive side of coil. Get a short length of wire and ground one end. The other end touch to the negative side of the coil. When you remove it you should get a spark. If not the coil is bad. This is basically what the points do, they connect to ground and then disconnect causing a spark. 1 Quote Link to comment
logiccreations
It's a new coil Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Even more reason to suspect the coil. Why don't you have the original one??? Quote Link to comment
logiccreations
It blew up 2 years ago Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Test it by grounding the negative side as I mentioned earlier. Spark? No.... the coil is no good. Spark? Yes.... the points are not working, distributor not grounded, or points not wired up properly Factory coils don't 'blow up' so was this some POS after market coil??? A red one that says flamethrower on the side??? 1 Quote Link to comment
logiccreations
No a standard and I'll buy a new one today then Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
No a standard and I'll buy a new one today then No! First prove that the coil is the problem. It's possible the coil is good but the points not wired correctly. Maybe the distributor isn't bolted down and grounded properly. Quote Link to comment
logiccreations
I'll take some pics for you in 20 ok Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I know what a coil looks like. Quote Link to comment
logiccreations
I ment how it's wired so you know if it's right or not Quote Link to comment
