A note to God...

Dear Datsun God,

Thank you for giving me the skills to turn an asthmatic, crap-handling, standard L18-powered, automatic 180b (610) into a sightly less asthmatic, but equally crap-handling L20-powered, automatic 180b (610).

But please can you tell me why it is that a motor that is 200cc larger is still such a piss-poor power-plant? Is it because the 3-speed Jatco auto is friggin' useless in transferring the torque increase ... or is it because the datto is 40 years old?

Remember back in the day, like twenty-odd years ago, when I was just a young fella... and I prayed that you would help me convert my old 2-door SSS auto into a manual out in the backyard?

"Please, God... please, please, please... make this manual gearbox work?"

Remember that time?

Well, back then that L18 actually kinda hauled ass with an auto behind it. And it went better with a manual. So what's the go now, dude... why is this L20b doing diddly-squat in my orange four door? Is it because the auto is rooted? Or is it because you took away my engine rebuilding skills and made me assemble a 2litre with no power?

Please, Datto God, give me a sign or a path to follow that leads to heaven ... where heaven is a place that Datsun automatics travel faster than maimed turtles.

Yours in hope

Batesy

PS: No offence, God .... but I'm gonna post this letter onto the Ratsun forum to seek guidance from the other Datto Disciples too.... just in case there's any Datto Gods there.

Autos are a little sluggish, no doubt about it.

What exactly has been done to the L20B? Is it stock and just rebuilt? Maybe it just needs to be adjusted? If the timing is out just a little you will loose the benefit of those extra 200cc.  Tight valves. Carb needs rebuilding, poor ignition, brakes dragging, vacuum leak, blown head gasket.... all of the above???

Note from God (and a fellow Aussie).

Post a quick intro post Batesy (doesnt need to be anything fancy) and let the masses who inhabit this site know a little bit about you.

Pictures, well mate, they are like cold beers and firm breasted Aussie women, simply a must have.  Again, like cold beer, the more pictures, the better things are.

This site has the greatest population of pic whores in the known universe.  If you havent got a photofucket account, create one and get snapping :)  Theres a how to link in the General Discussion forum first page.

Theres truckloads of information, and a lot of shit stirring that goes on here.

Overall, a good site.

Now, incase I didnt mention it, post some pics of your 180B.  Bonus points if you get titties (female) in one of the vehicle shots.

Mike, timing should be right. I followed Hainz's old YouTube instructions... wait, maybe that is the problem right there! ;)

All new electrics. Haven't put a rebuild kit through the carb though.

I also didn't put the timing light back over it after I replaced the coil, condensor and dizzy cap. Might be out a bee's dick.

As for all the baying for pics from the forum followers ... I'll get on it asap. After all, I don't want to be ostracised and excommunicated from the cult!!

I am in almost the exact same situation as you and am putting my money on carb. Cause well its the only thing left to do.

Same for me, Fritz, I'm going to go the carby route too. It's the only thing I haven't rebuilt or replaced.

Actually, the motor runs exactly how the old L18 runs at high (and I use that term loosely) speed. Plus the secondary throat looks pretty dirty despite copious amounts of carb cleaner so I might have some issue there.

Got a 32/36 weber coming from a mate ... well, whenever he can, literally and figuratively, pull himself away from his internet porn addiction!

Whatever it is, something ain't right. I've had a few dattos and my mates had lots of 1600/510s ... so I know that this motor should be doing way more than what it currently is. Even with an auto. That second gear in the Jatco is at a good ratio for acceleration. But it's ridiculously gutless in my current set up.
