You can also find a manual hub 720 and take those 4wd hubs. You can post a want ad in the classifieds as well. I will likely be parting out an 84 with Warn brand manual hubs on it soonish, so you can pm me if you want details.

As per

http://www.nissanpartsdeal.com/parts-list/1983-nissan-720-pickup/front-axle.html?Filter=%281%3dK%2fCAB%3b2%3dZ24%3b3%3dDX%3b4%3dF5%3b5%3dLONG%3b6%3d4WD%3b7%3dFED%29&Diagram=400_B02

it doesn't look like you need a conversion kit .

If your current auto-hubs are in descent shape, PM me and we could probably work out a deal.

I tried to put some brand new mile marker hubs on my 1986 720 and the center spline on the axle was to small for the hub. I bought them from a local parts store and they said they can not find a manufacturer for my half year, only 86 and a half+, not 86 and 0. Could I put some from an 85 or earlier on the truck? I need to replace my front split axles as they are all chewed up, would it work to put on an 86 and a half front split axle so I could buy new hubs? I am coming from automatic to manual hubs and the automatic ones don't work all the time.

The 720 ended around Dec '85 or half way through the '86 model year. (I can look up the exact date, could be Jan '86) everything after was a D-21 Hardbody. Model year ends are typically June of the previous year.

Are the auto hubs electric? Could it be powered by the transfer case switch that lights the 4x4 warning lamp in the dash???

Yes earlier manual hubs can be used to replace the automatic ones.

It was half way through the year 86 that they switched. They hubs are the terrible auto locking ones that "roll in". They require either the whole truck to roll forward (not backward) 3.3 feet or a couple spins off the back wheels, they also must be unlocked when you are done with 4wd by backing up. When I tried to install the new ones that are to big I disassembled and reassembled the automatic ones and they have worked for week but I am looking for manual ones still. My 720 was made in like the eighth month of 85.

Thanks

No one sells aftermarket hubs for 720s anymore. Yes spline count is different from hardbody. IIRC, one is 27 the other is 29 spline. They are also different lengths from 720 axles and possibly a different bolt pattern at the diff.

Hardbody started officially as an 86.5 year model.

That all being said, i have still have the hubs i mention above. Pm me if you're interested.

Thanks guys, this half year thing gets old quick, I got new break pads from NAPA and when I went to install them I discovered that they are hard body pads and had to order some eighty-five ones because his computer is unable to differentiate between an 86 720 and an 86 hard body. My 4-wheel drive light started working again recently, although it flashes in time with the bass on the radio. Is that normal? If it is not normal what would cause it?

The problem is with your parts guy. Parts store system will differentiate between the two models of truck sold that year. Just find a guy who realizes there are two options. Or buy everything but ignition/fuel system parts for an 85 to avoid the hassle. Assuming you're fuel injected, those two categories may differ from 85.

And the flashing with the bass is indicative it grounding because the vibration is causing wires to contact metal somewhere.

I actually swapped in an 84 engine from a wrecking yard in January and I kept my Weber, I will be starting a proper build thread soon once I get some photos to upload. The truck is actually on its third engine. I think I have a large number of loose grounds everywhere, I there a way to find the locations of all of them so I can clean them?

Thanks

I've done it though i couldn't give you a parts list.  I had a parts truck and just took everything in front of the rotor and swapped it all out for the other version.  Truck has been that way for years.  I used 4wd just a couple days ago, works great.
