Rhino13
Well I kinda want to build my engine... Because racetruck... and I have been told before that it's not worth it to build up an L18... Get a ka and build that if you want a racetruck. There's lots of turbo kits out there and you can get 620 motor mounts from redeye and use a 720 trans. I'm converting mine to a carb so I don't have to deal with the wiring, but most people use the efi which is nice for reliability and probably gas mileage. Quote Link to comment

Just looking to modify my current l18 for fun. I was thinking of fabbing my own turbo manifold. But for right now I'll probably just put a cam in it and a bigger carb, maybe stroke it... I don't really know Quote Link to comment
TENDRIL
are you able to do all this stuff? can you afford for your truck to be down and out for a while? do you own all the tools to rebuild a motor? space to do it and be organized? if you get a bigger cam you may need to shim the towers and get the right size lash pads etc. bigger carb, means proper jetting do you understand turbos and how to properly feed a draw through or blow through carb set up? i think you should do A LOT more reading and research on the subject, and gather every single part you need to do the upgrades, and when you are ready and have everything. than tear into it. 1 Quote Link to comment

Yes I have space, time, and I'm able to drive another vehicle for a while. I will have to do a lot more research but i just wanted some basic ideas of what to do Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
Swapping to an L20B, like your previous thread stated. But, if willing to spend money...KA. L28 N/A flat top pistons, block bored to 86mm to fit pistons. More carbs. Mild street cam. Quote Link to comment

distributorguy
Please explain your post. Racetruck? What's the goal? Street truck with power or a track-only or a drifter or ??? Towing power? You can do a lot to an L-series, but it would be easy to throw money at new parts and not make any more power than stock, or at least not an a way you can utilize it. Compression and developing cylinder pressure with the right cam operating in the right rpm range is key. 1 Quote Link to comment
hobospyder
I used to live in marysville, drive through there twice every day now. Redeye is in marysville and he has at least one if not two ka 620s. Look for the lifted green one and that's him. Drfeltersnatch is also not very far away depending on location in marysville. Everett has a wealth of datsun guys though. Just gotta find them. I also have an l20b that's still in the truck, unknown amount of miles, unknown of running or not (ask güber and flatcat for history), or there's the z22 and l18 blocks I have on the floor that I was going to make tables out of. I don't have any experience with driving the l18 or l20b blocks though, I've only ever driven my l16. Quote Link to comment
hobospyder
Oh and for ideas: http://forums.nicoclub.com/frankenstein-builds-look-here-for-project-info-t469980.html There's a couple l18 builds towards the bottom including one for turbo 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
You don't have money for KA swap but want to turbo an L18? I think more research is needed and then pick what fits your needs and ability best. The L20B is just the L18's larger younger brother. It makes maybe 10 more hp but with less effort and with increased displacement it makes more torque too. Best bang for the buck is a weber replacement carb for your L18. It's larger than the stock carb and if later planning a mild cam change it will have the extra capacity. If looking for parts please do so in the classifieds section. http://community.ratsun.net/classifieds/category/3-datsun-parts/?sort_key=date_added&sort_order=desc This is the 620 discussion forum. 1 Quote Link to comment
Rhino13
Yeah if you're planning to throw some money at it then seriously consider ka. I got mine for $250 (granted I have to get a new block), but they're out there cheap with a blown head gasket. Full gasket set is around $100 and I think the 620 motor mounts are around $100 also but I don't have a 620 so I'm not positive. They make 30-40 more hp n/a and have potential for lots more with not much $. 1 Quote Link to comment

Joseph_change
Okay so this thread is kinda all over the place so i'm sorry haha. But I think I just found a KA24DE that I might be able to afford, and I've seen other KA threads that say to use a 720 tranny so I'll be looking for one soon. 1 Quote Link to comment
