Cardinal Grammeter
My front seat is blue vinyl with a mostly white with blue and gold weave inserts. The springs are in good shape. The truck has a BLACK interior - it was originally a blue/blue truck but they changed it to red/black. They found the door and kick panels in black, but I have a blue seat. (The mat is also dark blue and perfect. Chances of swapping that out are, well, unlikely to say the least.) Right now I have the back skin off to repair one broken zigzag spring (one of the short lumbar support ones) and am shoring up the ripped through burlap backing on the jute pad. So I'm thinking, now would be the perfect time to hog ring in some nice black skins! I don't want a "seat cover" which goes over the original. I want proper seat upholstery. Some of the custom seat cover places say you can install their product either way but if you remove the old, you may have to add 1/2" of foam. That is probably not a bad idea for an early 620, but I'd like it done right. I also have no idea what the original pattern looked like. If it is simple rib inlays, that is usually one of the standard patterns offered. Or are there vendors out there that make original pattern covers? (This is not a restoration, but it will be a fairly clean truck when done. The days is cracked - so much for perfection.) And as always, I'm looking not to spend lots of $$$. I'm so far over budget in time and hours, that... Thanks Tom Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Get rid of the bench and find some nice bucket seats for it. Datsun buckets were the worst seats ever made back then, so get something in black and 30 years newer. 1 Quote Link to comment
Cardinal Grammeter
This is going to be a 2nd vehicle/utility vehicle so I'm not going to spend much time in it. And, the simplest way to go is recover the existing seat. I would if spray vinyl would work on a seat, but then there is the knitted insert. But if I ran into an OEM bench seats, Uh Oh.... I was just check Parts Manual and the 73 and later had a notch in the bottom cushion near the floor shift. Earlier models did not. MINE DOES NOT HAVE THE NOTCH. Looks like someone must have found this nice blue seat and put it in. Is it possible its a 521 seat? It bolts perfectly to the floor nut plates. So I don't have the right bench for it. But.... w/o the notch is a lot easier to upholster. (There is that one track mind again.) NOTE: I've already posted an ad for a OEM skin - I better change it because I don't have the notch. datzenmike
But if I ran into an OEM bench seats, OEM for Feb '76 and up King Cabs only. Might fit a reg cab but probably won't adjust fully. I hate them. Quote Link to comment
datsunwizard
The 73 didn't have a notch for the shifter, I am an orignal owner. Quote Link to comment
Cardinal Grammeter
Parts man says w/o notch to September 1973 - I was thinking the 1973 model year came out in the fall of 1972? But then I seem to recall the Japanese model years were out of phase with ours? I guess the $64 question is should my 1974 have the notch? I'm guessing Yes. It appears I have a "L16" seat (and it also appears I have a L16 air cleaner too since the manifold heat duct fitting collides with the EGR valve.) Damn Monkeys.... Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
From memory... the first 620 build date would be around April '72 (possibly sooner) and would be lumped in with the '73 model year which ended Sept '73 'about' 18 months later. Oct '73 through Sept '74 would be the '74 model year. After '74 I think the model year change was June/July like most Datsuns. Quote Link to comment
Cardinal Grammeter
I really need to get a seat cover - my seat is tearing up my clothes. There was an old upholstery guy that thought this one company might have OEM patterns. In particular, I want a cover that has provision for the wire rod near the top of the back (top) cushion. Joshua
I've got a 77 (620) kc and three days ago scored a 79 (620) kc..excited..77 's got 2015 mini copper seats and the 79's got original bucket seats w/matching door cards.I really like the mini copper seats, are the original datsun bucket seats NOT worth reupholstering ?, are they NOT very comfortable ?.. Haven't checked yet but I'll bet it's more expensive $$$ to reupholster original bucket seats than mabye just finding another set of cool leather bucket seats, like, I don't know, mabye some different mini Cooper seats ?.. Anyone's comments, thoughts or opinions on the matter would be greatly appreciated..Datsun novice here.. Quote Link to comment
