choke and poor accelerator

Hello everyone,

It's been a while. Last time having problem go uphills and my brother in law help out adjust carburetor and replace new distributor cap. Works great go uphills with no problem. After 2 weeks start having issues. Start the engine press on gas pedal won't accelerate at all then choke push forward. When press brake full stop at any stops then press gas pedal engine sputtering won't accelerate for at least 5 sec then choke push forward. Inspect carburetor parts and notice idle stop solenoid wire cut off. I need help insight what cause choke and poor accelerator.

1. Done oil change and filter

2. Replace new gas filter.

Thank you for your time.

Need more information. Is this the stock Datsun carb on your '80 210? Does it still have the original automatic choke and is the wire to it hooked up? I don't understand your phrase "...choke push forward." Can you explain that a little more?

If you have an automatic choke, with the engine cold and before you start it, take the air cleaner off. The choke butterfly will probably be partially closed. If you grab the throttle linkage and open the throttle, the choke plate should go closed. When you start the engine and get it warmed up, the choke plate should be fully open. Is that what is happening?

With the engine off, block the choke plate open with a screwdriver, shine a light down the carb throat and move the throttle linkage. You should see a squirt of gas each time you turn the linkage. This is from the accelerator pump. Are you seeing this squirt of gas?

Can you see the level of gas through the round window on the side of the carb float bowl? Not all carbs have a window, so yours may not.

Does the engine idle okay? If so, I suspect someone has removed the needle from the idle cut solenoid, or it wouldn't idle at all. You can unscrew the solenoid and see if there is a needle sticking out from it if you are curious. I don't think this has anything to do with your poor running problem.

So tell us more, please!

Hello Len,

Thank you for the respond.

I'm not familiar with "carburetor". It was my wife's ailing father gift for my wife. We are currently living in Puerto Rico. She has been driving for 7 months and fall in love with Datsun. I suspect some parts around the carburetor are missing and some electric wires cut off. I'm not a mechanic and learn DIY on daily basis. I will upload some photos.

Answer to your questions.

1. "Choke move forward" ( like hiccup)

Start engine, move automatic stick to "D" press on gas pedal feel engine sputtering really loud refuse to move forward any inches. I have to wait like 5 to 10 seconds or so to let engine itself push forward. If longer, I have to get out of car and push forward to make engine move. While driving on the way sometimes hiccup absord energy (movement) then sputter. press brake on full stop engine absorb energy wait for 5-10 sec itself push forward an inch with out press on gas pedal. Repeat vice versa. Does it make sense?

2. Choke butterfly always open.

3. Yes I can see gas level through the round window.

4. Idle...I can feel the engine shake bad.

I haven't check choke plate, throttle linkage and accelerator pump.

I will update and see what happens.

Regards

Hello,

Last week getting worst keep jerking and sputtering really bad. Transmission issue? Oil change last month 20w50. Too thick? Should use 10w30 or 10w40. Should I change Auto Transmission fluid 75w90?

By the way, how do I post photos?

Thanks

wow I can't believe I actually know this lol

The bottom picture is your idle cut off or anti-dieseling thingy, so when you cut the power to the engine it pushes a small pin into the fuel flow and stops the engine from sucking anymore in.  No power to that and it thinks your engine is still off, and you're not getting any fuel to the carbs.

Try putting 12volts to it, you should hear the pin click and pull out (if it isn't frozen).  I've also heard of those getting stuck in the open position, if that was the case then cutting the power wire wouldn't have kept your car from starting, it would just diesel like crazy when you turn it off.

So... hopefully I actually contributed here, instead of always being the one that asks for help!!  lol

Good luck!

Are you saying you changed the engine oil to 20W-50?

Does the auto tranny have ATF (automatic transmission fluid) in it? See here under "Gas Station Information":

http://datsun1200.com/modules/mediawiki/index.php?title=Automatic_Transmission

Auto fluid level must be checked with the engine idling and the transmission warmed up to normal operating temperature.

Please clarify that the tranny has the correct fluid and fluid level so we can eliminate that as some part of the problem. The not working in R is worrisome.
