Emilio's79620
Hey ratsun so my 78 620 was stolen but I had gotten it back without a battery and my ignition (part where the key goes into only) so I just bought them and now I tried to put the negative cable on (after the positive of course) and I get sparks from the neg pole on the battery I figured it was a short but I'm not quite sure where it is there used to be an aftermarket stereo if that helps but I removed it please help I can't diagnose the problem 1 Quote Link to comment

KoHeartsGPA
If you have something currently drawing current it will spark a little bit, it be helpful to know how intense the sparking is, but little bit means something is on. 1 Quote Link to comment
Draker
Hopefully not that much... 2 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Unplug the ignition.... still sparks? Everything but the starter has to go through a fusible link. It can't be very much of a spark or a fuse would blow or a fusible link. 2 Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
It's possible that whoever stole it put a jumper in to bypass the ignition (silly since it could be done at the switch plug, but thieves aren't exactly mensa material). The ignition bypass could still be there. Mike's suggestion is good- unplug the ignition switch and see if it still does it. Maybe the switch is on, or not the right one for the truck. If that doesn't do it, pull fuses. 2 Quote Link to comment
Emilio's79620
Not a lot of sparks just little ones 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Some things are 'on' all the time. The clock is on all the time. Is the horn working? If not maybe the relay is stuck and the owner just pulled the wires off the horns. The relay will still be on and drawing power. Lights, brake lights, interior light, 4 way hazard switch all have power to them and can be on without the ignition switch on. Someone may have tapped into one of these for power for a CB, power amp, radio? Something may still be on. 2 Quote Link to comment

Emilio's79620
Well it never had sparks like this before it was stolen and also for some reason I can't get the image codes for my pics from photobucket 1 Quote Link to comment
Emilio's79620
Is it normal for the negative to be right above the alternator 1 Quote Link to comment
Emilio's79620
Horn works also 1 Quote Link to comment

KoHeartsGPA
I didn't see the battery in any of the pics in that album link, however, there's a wire on pic 1 of 13 that attaches to a fuse terminal at the fuse box that is a no no, where does that wire go? 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Unplug the ignition.... still sparks? Did you try this? Can't move forward if items aren't tried and discounted as the cause. Unplug the alternator. Sometimes a diode goes bad and drains power. One at a time unplug the 6 fuses. If one stops the sparks, you have the circuit that is drawing the power. 3 Quote Link to comment
Emilio's79620
Kohearts Not sure but it's been there since I bought the truck 1 Quote Link to comment

Emilio's79620
I forgot to mention that I had the negative completely on once and no sparks after it was fully on but there were sparks before it was on all the way I was alittle unsure of it so I removed it 1 Quote Link to comment
KoHeartsGPA
If you can, please shoot video and upload it to YouTube and link it here so we can see what you're seeing ;) 2 Quote Link to comment
Draker
Agreed, let's see it Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Of course it will spark if you touch it to the terminal and then interrupt the flow by removing it. Both terminals will do this. The problem is that there shouldn't be any power flowing through the system at all. An electric clock isn't really enough to cause a spark but a relay that is energized probably will. My choke was disconnected but the relay still hot... took about 3 days to drain the battery. Emilio's79620
It's literally a smaller spark than a lighters I've never uploaded anything on utube so I can't do the video i'm going to do like Mike said and play with fuses first then the alternator I will also check where the cord goes from the fuses Quote Link to comment
Emilio's79620
There is no clock but there is a aftermarket gauge and there was an aftermarket stereo but I removed it I will post news as soon as I am done trying Quote Link to comment
Draker
Well... you could check the current draw with a multi-meter and then use that to determine if the load is worth worrying about? Quote Link to comment
