MK63 vented type caliper modification to solid type possible?

Hi guys,

For several reasons i Need / Want a MK63 SUmitomo brake for the SOLID disk for my 240Z. Now the Thing is vented type calipers are available used and even in replica form in good numbers. but to find a solid type MK63 cailper (for the non-vented disk) is almost impossible.

Now i'm wondering: Does anybody now the difference? is it just the space between the calipers for the bigger disk or is anything else different?

If only the space is differnt wouldn't it be possible to buy a set of calipers for the vented disk and just mill off the difference between vented and unveted disk between the two caliper-halfs?

Or am i totally wrong? Seems like a great solution to me at the Moment but i'm not very experienced in this filed so maybe you can give me some pro's / con's or anybody knows where i can get a set of solid type MK63 calipers?

I know there are other Options but i'm in switzerland so all the other Options are not working together with FIA regulations and the local law.

Are they really so detail oriented they would be able to tell if you installed a vented brake setup? Those guys are serious.

 

But to answer your question, I would put up a want ad here. Most guys try to ditch that setup pretty quick here in the states, so someone might have a set laying around.

I understand they are easily recognized by someone who knows what to look for. I'm merely surprised the govt goes in to that detail. If your using stock late 70s parts in place of stock early 70s parts, the inspector would have to have a list that tells him "only non vented rotors". Not telling you you are wrong, just thinking damn that's harsh, maybe I shouldn't complain as much about some of the laws where I live.

Yeah actually they have this list and a lot of knowledge. The risk is small because they cannot know All the cars and parts, but if they're suspicious about vented disks on such an old car they will check the Homologation book and see These are non-original. thats the main Problem. so the solid disk type will minimize the risk of being recognized as non-original Brakes drasticly but at the same time improve the braking Performance a lot. We'll see..

I have a set on my 240z now used with vented 280zx dics , but i gone rebuild them to solid disc , also for my FIA papers , my ones i have sinds a long time and did the spacer modification myself , so i can build them back to standard , i can maybe find a other set over here in the Netherlands .

On customer rally cars we used also Toyota calipers

thanks for th e reply, but meanwhile i found and got the solid type OEM calipers. thanks anyway and good to know it's possible ;)
