orangie
My truck doesn't seem to have a clutch "pressed" switch to allow the car to start. Did these trucks ever have them? I don't remember my dads old honda having one or my old 5.0 having one. It seems you always just checked if the car was in neutral and started it up without pressing the clutch.in. I thought about installing one, but I'm thinking they aren't really needed if you are in the habit of checking the stick is neutral before you turn the engine over. Quote Link to comment
hobospyder
my 73 lacks the neutral safety switch as well. comes in handy if you have a non running vehicle that'll turnover and you need to move it. i only own one automatic so i constantly hit the clutch when i go to start a vehicle anyways. or make sure it's in neutral. datzenmike
They don't have a clutch interlock. They were from a time when people were more intimate with their vehicles and had to actually know how to drive them, not like today, where the driver is divorced totally from the driving experience. (keyless push button starting, automatics etc.) I would slip into neutral to crank start. I avoid depressing and holding the clutch down as much as possible. It only forces the crankshaft forward against the thrust bearing during cold crank starts with no real oil pressure and while waiting at stops, the release bearing is taking the full pressure plate load on it. Just as I come to a stop I slip into neutral and wait for the light to turn. If the light is green and it takes me 3 seconds to get moving this could even prevent an accident from someone running a red light. There is one other 'advantage' to NOT having a safety switch. If your car is disabled but the engine can be turned over with the starter, you can place in first and use the starter to move the vehicle off to the side of the road. You are correct and only need to 'be in the habit'. Quote Link to comment
shacks510
I avoid depressing and holding the clutch down as much as possible. I do that too. It bothers me when I ride with people who use the clutch as neutral. They'll sit at a stoplight for 5 minutes with their foot on the clutch. I'll hold the clutch if I'm stopping briefly. 1 Quote Link to comment
