Oil filters - Z95 instead of Z167?

Recommended Posts

Greetings gentlemen,

The recommended oil filter for my Ford Rocam motor is GUD Z167. Can I use a GUD Z95 instead? I've checked the threads and the gasket on both filters - they look identical and the non-spec filter seems to seal. I live in a village - no auto shops here - but I've got many Z95 filters in stock for my L18. The Z95 is much bigger than the Z167, and doesn't have a non-return valve, but it faces up on the motor, so the oil doesn't drain out when the motor's off. Would appreciate any advice - thanks

I am not familar with Ford engines used on other continents, but most of the USA Ford engines I am familar with use an oil filter with a  bypass valve in the oil filter, in case the filter gets clogged.

Datsun L engines use a seperate bypass valve in the block, under the oil filter that does the same thing.  The Nissan OEM oil filters that I use, do not have this bypass valve, because of the Nissan engine block having one.

If your Ford engine does not have a bypass valve, and the oil filters you use are like the Nissan oil filters I use, putting a Nissan type oil filter on your Ford engine would leave you without a bypass valve.  If the filter element gets clogged, and granted this rarely happens, unless you never change oil, or filters, you could leave your engine starved for oil.
