Z24 with weber 32/36

Is egr valve needed with this setup? Can i remove the pipe and egr from exhaust manifold to egr? Id so what is used to plug the manifold and egr port?

I run my z24 without the emissions stuff. On the intake manifold, make or buy a block off plate that covers the opening. Use the egr bolts and gasket to seal it. On the exhaust, I cut the egr pipe off, leaving about an inch hanging out of the exhaust. Then I stuck a bolt in that and welded it closed.

 

This isn't necessary to run a Weber. In fact a good condition egr can improve gas mileage, but you can run without it and overall engine performance will not suffer.

The above. You can also remove the pipe from the exhaust manifold and replace with a metric thread pipe plug. No welder needed. The easiest thing is to just leave it alone and pull the hose off the EGR valve to deactivate it.  Depends what you want.

I was trying to clean up all the unnecessary piping. Had to replace a head gasket and that pipe is aggravating to get off and on to remove the head.

I hate removing the damn things as well. Once you get one free though you can slather it with high temp anti-sieze and the next time it should come off without the ridiculous fight. Do as you will, but that's another option.

Actually none of it is unnecessary and all are there for a reason. But they are a pain.

I am going to put a Weber on my truck. Just wondering if you all could give me a heads up on kind of hiccups I can look forward too. I have worked on a couple edelbrock carbs in old Chevys and that's about it.

Get a direct replacement from Redline. Has everything needed... gaskets, adaptor, bolts, air filter. And it's not worn out and not been rebuilt 5 times and missing parts.

Research the difference between the 38 and 34/36.  I have a 38, love it, but it does suck on MPGs

In Phoenix I have to emission test my 1986 720 every 2 years so I have the EGR valve intact.  The emission test person always pulls the EGR vacuum hose off to check for vacuum.

I'm with Mike on this one. Spend the money on new one. By the time you try to get on older one working good, you may as well have just started new and been 10X happier.

I've got a used 32/36 on my L20. I've rebuilt it twice... It works, but it's far from perfect. I would also recommend new.

I put a new Weber 32/36 on my 86 720 when I bought it over 5 years ago in Battle Mountain Nevada that I ordered from Pierce Manifolds.  Still running great!

~$300 with the adapter plate, list it as any year between 83-85, the 86 was switching to efi so some places assume it's on every 86.

I don't know. The truck doesn't have an air cleaner with it, and the stud is gone, too.

The 720 Z24s are rare with the TBI.  I have only seen a few and they were all 1985 4x4?

Are you sure that's not an '83 or '84? That engine is exactly like mine. There is only one wingnut that holds on the original air cleaner, and two nuts that bolt (via a bracket on the side of the air cleaner) to the valve cover.

The Z24i with TBI was from April, '85 on so just a couple of months at the end of '85 and June to October '85 or 5 months into the '86 model year. This was the changeover to the D-21 Hardbody and the end of the number trucks. The first Hardbodys were November '85.
