margaritaville
Just got my 73 620 running today!:) It has a 5 speed in it, which is cool. I found out that reverse is in the 1st gear location. And 1st is in the second gear location, and so on. What trans is this? Any thoughts? Thanks. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Hi Jimmy and welcome to Ratsun. That is an L series FS5W63A Dogleg 5 speed transmission. Dogleg describes the 1st to second shift pattern. It was first used in an A series configuration on the mid '76 B-210. It was the standard equipped manual transmission for the '77-'79 S10 (200sx) and optionally available on some models of the '78-'79 A10 (later HL510) and in Z series configuration on the '80-'81 A10. This is a nice light duty 5 speed for cars with small displacement engines. It's most popular because it's the same length as the 4 speeds it replaces so no shortening of the driveshaft. The shifter and the speedometer are also in the same position as the four speeds too. 1 Quote Link to comment

margaritaville
Thanks for the help!:) The trans needs a new reverse switch, will a standard 4speed one work, or do u think I need a switch specifically for that transmission? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Four speeds should work. I think some switches are making contact and break contact in certain positions. Others like the reverse are open normally and close or make contact in gear. Quote Link to comment
