datzenmike Posted August 22, 2015 Report Share Posted August 22, 2015 Disconnect the drive shaft. Remove the four bolts on the axle tube behind each of the backing plates. Pull axles outward far enough to clear the splines from the differential. Probably there is enough brake line slack to allow this. Unbolt differential from axle housing and pull forward to remove. Reverse to install. I don't think the gasket is used anymore so use a sealer type gasket maker in a tube. 90W GL-5 oil. Here, the driveshaft size was increased in the early '80s and so was the flange that mounts to the companion flange on the differential pinion. Naturally, Nissan changed the spline on the pinion so the flanges can't be swapped. So check that the driveshaft will fit before swapping. Quote Link to comment
