it just started randomly cutting in and out. for about 40km of the 120km trip today it read 13.6v and charged battery 1 to full and the VSR swapped and it part charged battery 2. the rest of the trip it just read the battery reading (from 8.94v batt 1 to 13.8v[vsr cut out]) (batt 2 cut in and charged from 11.2v to 12.4v then the alt stopped working again)

Maybe you should make use of this post about your alternator. Keeps all the charging posts together. Did you try the suggestion there?

ck to make sure battery is good and the cables.
Most of my electrical were always bad cables and or corrossion

Water on the belt will do this. Another thing is replacing the brushes.

My alt is still cutting in and out. No cause yet. Sparky had no idea why it happens. Its now been rebuilt

Still happens though

Which is the expensive way to prove that it was fine to begin with.

Some things that might seem like the alternator charge is going on and off....

A bad plug on back of alternator.

A loose charge wire on the alternator. (probably tight now)

A flown fusible link. (one of two) Vehicle motion can cause it to make and break connection.

A bad or poor fuse connection in the fuse box.

Bad ignition on/off switch.

A loose wire on the volt meters.

A loose wire on the dual battery set up

You don't see the duct tape, the miss matched plug and wires, home made connector crimped on? This is home made. Hokey!  I have doubts that the correct alternator is even on there.

On a normal 720 here the White/Black stripe wire connects to a fusible link and the battery positive on one end and to the ignition switch on the other. How can we know what was done here?

Follow through with this post... http://community.ratsun.net/topic/67245-workshop-manual-source-for-the-1981-datsun-720-dual-l18/?do=findComment&comment=1288224 Dual cab and 5 speed have nothing to do with the charging system. Get something with a L18 wiring diagram.

wobbled the single wire. alt cut in and out. got it to a good spot and taped it for now. seems like a bad connection.

Christ taping it up IS your problem. Make a solid connection and solder it if you have to. Good clean firm connectors and plugs. How do you survive 180 miles out of town doing this??????

when replacing the alt and adding a second. (removing ac compressor as its stalling the motor again when used) what type is suggested. looking at something like this

or the ford kind early 80's f trucks came with. as they in part hooked right to the battery. bypassing the stock wiring
