Fuel vapor hoses for 1973 610 gas tank

Recommended Posts

My 1973 610 gas tank had two crumbling one-half inch (inside dimension) gas vapor hoses. Does anyone know where I can buy replacement hose by the foot? All the regular big box auto parts places say, Yeh we have 1/2" fuel vapor hose! But every time it turns out it is 1/2" OUTSIDE dimension. NAPA came close but theirs was still 1/8th" too small.

I went to PepBoys and O'reilly and saw the hose. It is 1/2 inch outside. I have been to local auto parts and to hardware stores. I keep getting shown i/2 inch outside diameter hose. I cannot find any fuel vapor hose 1/2 inch inside diameter. People offered to sell me i/2 inch inside  diameter hose that is stamped with words that say "Heater hose". They say that is the only thing that there is that is that size. What should I do?

Well the hose cannot be 'rubber' or it will disintegrate. It has to be petroleum resistant.

What about clear vinyl tubing? Neoprene, Tygon or Nitrile ?... http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2014/12/05/tech-101-fuel-line-hose-what-you-should-and-should-not-use/

Not sure what they are selling you at your local O'Reilly, but as a ten year veteran of that company, I can assure you that the 1/2 fuel hose we sell is measured on the inside diameter and that we do in fact offer fuel grade hose in that dimension. Try a different employee, because you got a dumb one. Sadly common in my industry.

Not every store keeps it on hand, but most of them should, or they can order it in easily for you.

Part number: 27006 by Gates - 1/2 ID fuel rated hose sold by O'Reilly Auto.

I had not paid enough attention to all the fittings (there are large flares on two pipe stubs). It turns out I need at least 5/8'. When I tried to stretch my warmed almost 1/2" hose, it began to crack. I finally found a source for larger diameter gasoline ok hoses, the marine industry. There are many suppliers on Ebay, some even carry USCoastGuard approved A1 and A2 hose. The boating supply chain West Marine has the hose in stock, but convenience does cost a bit more.

Wow, where are those 510 hoses available? Do they have hoses for the wagon? I did buy "5/8 inch" Gates marine hose. But, although it is stamped 5/8" ID, it is actually 1/16 inch smaller and it has a very thick wall and is almost impossible to stretch even when heated. It turns out my tube fittings are actually 17mm, that's 1/16 inch bigger than 5/8". And there is a dogleg offset of 2 inches. The Gates hose I bought cannot make the bend. Plus, the Gates hose is exactly 1 inch OD, the absolute max to go through openings in the frame. At this point I wonder if I have to custom make vapor hose/tubing out of copper. From the info I have read on other auto sites, it seems copper can be ok if you are diligent in protecting it from vibration.
